pjsny78 Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 I have a problem and am hoping someone may be able to help. I unfortunately have to tie down my plane as no hangers are available nor affordable where I reside. The problem I have is that birds like to perch on my tail and crap all over my plane on the same spot everyday. I’d like to stick a spiked strip of some kind up there but I don’t know if that is the best way to go about this. Does anyone else have this problem and have found a solution? I am really looking for something that will not be a long process to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Quote
Shadrach Posted April 5, 2012 Report Posted April 5, 2012 There are a number of planes at my local drome with plastic owls affixed to the vertical stab. When I was training the 150 I used was stored in an open T-hangar. It and many of the other planes had rubber snakes on the flat surfaces... Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Often when they perch on your tail it is part of buiding a nest in the tail cone through the elevator openings. I made a little bra that clips over some of the tubing with velcro to block that access. Bright orange with a streamer hanging down. One time with a bird nest discovered at annual is enough. You can see this cover and some others I created on my photo gallery. I cut up an orange colored detergent bottle to create the hook/battens attached to the cloth with 1/4" hand stitches and whipping line. Actually have three battens: a central stiffener and two side hooks. Velcro at each hook and on the bottom. Orange sumbrella cut with a hot knife, no seams. Quote
Piloto Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 On your next annual inspect bottom panels inside the wing adjacent to the main gear wells. Rats love to nest at this location. They get in thru the gear assist spring rib opening at the wheel well. Check for droppings and dead bodies, they are corrosive. José Quote
MooneyMitch Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Try this Patrick; http://www.birdbusters.com/airplane_bird_deterrent.html or...........I'll bet our own "Muncy the Inventor", can create. or inspire something for your for a lot less $'s ! Quote
201er Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 I think they're attracted by your new paint job! I don't have this problem ;p Quote
pjsny78 Posted April 6, 2012 Author Report Posted April 6, 2012 Thank you guys so much for all of your input. Mitch - i think i am going to ask don if he can come up with something like the link you showed me. its kind of pricey but exactly what i need as that is where the birds like to sit. i just need a ladder to put that thing on. i cant reach the top of the tail. Jose- Thank god i dont have any rats where i am at least not that i am aware of. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 That unit I posted has a long vertical handle on it. Easy peasy to place on your Mooney tail. Heck, the ad even shows it on a Mooney tail..........perfect!! Quote
pjsny78 Posted April 6, 2012 Author Report Posted April 6, 2012 Lol, oh yeah i just realized that. i guess thats the one then. thanks mitch and everyone else for their great advice. Quote

MooneyMitch Posted April 6, 2012 Report Posted April 6, 2012 Some type of item that can propel a certain object through the air to possibly come in contact with the bird in order to get its attention maybe? Quote
pjsny78 Posted April 7, 2012 Author Report Posted April 7, 2012 I just called to place an order for that rudder spike thingy and they are discontinued. The owner said that there was not a big enough demand for it. That’s ashame. I’m going to write don Muncy and see what he can come up with. He’s a real genius when it comes to this stuff. Quote
Cris Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 Patrick Forget the owl snake etc They do not work if they do not move. Try this on top of your rudder where the birds sit It is like silicone and birds hate it. http://www.bird-x.com/bird-proof-gel-products-37.php?page_id=66 If you do not get it before we get together I'll give you some. wishboneash Posted April 7, 2012 Report Posted April 7, 2012 I plan to put this on my Mooney. http://www.amazon.com/Tanglefoot-Bird-Repellent-5-5-Tube/dp/B000HM8CYW I can't find bird-x in small quantities and would like to make sure it is effective before buying larger quantities. It seems birds like my plane more than others in the immediate area. I think the dark glossy green paint possibly attracts birds. Sriram/M20J Quote
