PMA 7000 talking to me......

The audio panel must have heard I was thinking about upgrading the 430's to a 750 and decided it wanted to be jealous.

Random training flight and I start getting a repetitive, "check engine speed" and check "boost", started repeating these 2 phrases over and over, started by providing about 15 seconds between them and then continually repeating, never heard it before, my engine monitor is an older JPI 700, so nothing fancy there.  Thought it was something in the bluetooth between the phones and ipad, turned all of those off and it still continued, on the pilot side only.  Tried to diagnose in the air but just couldn't figure it out.  Landed OK, found the audio panel circuit breaker, pulled it, let it sit for a minute, pushed it back in and the female voice is gone.  During the quoting process of the 750, not but last week the avionics shop asked me if I had any problems with the audio panel.  Naturally I said "no problems", I don't want to pay for a remote audio panel when this one is working fine......Now I am questioning that statement.  Everything is 22 years old so maybe it is failing?  Need some guidance before I spend money I don't need to spend.

Seriously, though, just go straight to a PMA 450B.  It is the best available, by far.

there should be an acknowledge button to silence the voice. Mine was on the RHS of the LHS control wheel.   And it should go through all the messages on initial startup until you acknowledge.  Or maybe it is silent because there is nothing in alarm state?  I forget, but mine had 'check various things' until I acknowledged, then was silent.

The 'check boost' is triggered by a real overboost, probably connected to the overboots light?  Check RPM?  not sure how it measures that unless the JPI has an alarm?

It was a special option PS7000 that had all these messages.  It is in the install manual, I think various pins need to be grounded to activate.  So if the alarm trigger goes high 'check boost', then there is probably a relay in the circuit too.

That is the mystery.  No button to acknowledge, no turbo on the plane, have had plane for 8 years.  Basic original factory avionics except for the JPI and it is older so not one of them fancy units.  It just started talking to me about 10 minutes into the flight.  My concern (only for my checkbook) is that this unit is about to start failing.....and while I am in there should I just remove it as well and be done with this as a future problem? 

Any opinions on the Garmin audio panels?

The audio panel doesn't know how to talk. The voice must be coming from the somewhere else. Replacing the audio panel will only stop the voice messages if you don't connect the the source of the messages to the audio panel. The EDM700 doesn't have voice messages, so you must have an audio alerter device installed. You need to get that fixed.

Probably no need for a new audio panel as has been mentioned. The voices may be coming from your inner person but definitely not just the audio panel, however these panels did have an option for digital annunciation - so maybe that was added by an owner along the way. (https://www.ps-engineering.com/assets/docs/7000R12.pdf) If that was the case and you need to silence the voices, find the ACK button and it should silence them.

(If the audio panel is possessed you may need an exorcist. If you go that route just make sure you don't miss a payment or it might get re-possessed  )

 

If at some point you do decide to replace it though, since you already have a relatively modern stereo intercom/audio panel and wiring on an Ovation made around 2000, I would ask the shop for an estimate on "re-pinning" your audio panel wires to a newer audio panel - this will be much less expensive than a quote on installing a new audio panel. You have all of the wires there to do it - it just needs to be pinned from the KMA24/PS-Engineering PMA7000 style of slide-in connectors to the newer style connectors used in the PMA8000. This will make it compatible with any of the newer PS 8000s, 450s or any of the Garmin Audio Panels sold in the last 20 years.

On my previous airplane I asked my avionics shop about what the cost would be to re-pin that - they said it would take less than a day's labor. I've often thought that someone who enjoys wiring could make a harness adaptor solution for updating the 7000 to the 8000 and make it nearly a plug-and-play quick upgrade and make a few dollars in the process.

If I'm understanding the documentation provided by @LANCECASPER, the description of the six messages you can get from the PMA7000 are presented in section 2.4.19 on PDF page 14.  In particular, messages five and six are "check engine speed" and "check boost" respectively.

Disagree, I have a PS7000 with the DRAWS option and it definitely talks.

Just talked (real talk not voices in my head talking) with the PS folks, super helpful and responsive.  This audio panel could come with an option for "talking", it is part of the digital warning and/or recording option.  I do have an IRS which I never use.  Tech said there are 4 pins and to remove them or the unit is broken internally.  All I know is when I pulled power to unit, voices went away and did not come back.  

I think this is what has been discussed above.

Just ready to write the check for a 750 and wanted to avoid unnecessary expense maybe, but the unit is 22 years old.

The voice alerts are triggered by grounding the pins at the audio panel. If you can, check the condition of the wires going to those pins. They might be shorted to the airframe periodically.
