I already asked the dealer about it. He said he touched it and it was just the color of the iron.

he mentioned a basic white paint job will cost around $4k. If I want a better design paint, then it will cost $8k-$10k.

Other than those two things, what else is he lying about?

There’s not a chance you can get a one color paint job for $4000. If you just figure $100 an hour, that’s 40 hours. It will easily take 1.5 times that in prep work. Then buying materials. Then painting it. Then putting everything back together and balancing the control surfaces. If you could find a quality single color  job today for $10,000-$12,000 I don’t know where that would be.

Maybe the seller is thinking of taxiing it over to Earl Scheib, where he used to promised to paint any car for $99 (windows, headlights, tires and all rubber  trim included).

Dealer is a liar, probably a former used car salesman.

Two things with the low SMOH.

1)  As mentioned, just low SMOH is not the whole story.  And engine with 200 hours SMOH done 20 years ago is NOT a good thing.

2)  A very low SMOH can mean the seller did the overhaul as a selling point.  And may have not used a good shop, so you have a 50 hour SMOH engine that is in worse condition than a 1500 hour engine.  Not all overhauls are the same.  If it is FRM or Factory New, that is a baseline.

One plane I looked at, had the engine overhauled in 2010.   And overhauled again in 2011.  And a top overhaul in 2017, and during the annuals in 2020 and 2021 they had to replace a cylinder.  Not exactly quality overhauls.

Some people prefer to buy a plane with a high time engine, that is priced accordingly, so THEY can pick the shop to do the overhaul.

Really appreciate everyone’s advice.
Any thoughts/suggestions on the following aircraft?

1966 Mooney M20E

Thank you

If the seller is willing to negotiate it’s worth a look. But 95k is a solid no.

it’s going to need some attention a few different places but it’s just as likely to be a good unit as it is bad from looking at the pictures.

Well, the paint job will be less than normal as there is no time/materials to strip the old paint.   But still no way it will be $4K.   Maybe get it painted for $15k - $20K range.

I remember that ads back in the 60s in CA where it was $29.95.  They masked the windows and the lights and chrome, and painted everything else.

My Dad had his 55 Chevy painted. :D

Anyone can paint an airplane for $4k! Sheesh ….

Now for some realistic numbers …

Materials alone for a “decent” imron white paint job are alone $4-5k. 1-2 gallons of primer and hardener, acid etch, alodine if you subscribe to that church, 3-4 gallons of paint, including color schemes, a gallon of red or silver will set you back $1600 -2000 each, N numbers, wing walk, window sealant, sandpaper, wire wheels, rivet scotch brite, 233 tape, stripper, aluminum foil tape….

I’ll tell you what:

I’ll bet you $4,000 that you can’t do a “decent” imron paint job, normal white with two stripe colors of your choice, strip and paint, aviation grade materials including anti corrosion/epoxy primer for $4k.

If you can, I’ll outsource all our paintjobs to you and just make stacks.

What ever happened to DuPont DULUX enamel? Used to spray it after heating it in hot water for a better flow! :-)

The airplane listed above has many red flags in my mind

Do not consider it unless you have someone with you who KNOWS Mooneys and what to look for

There is a reason why its stripped clean. It has all the markers of neglect to me.

The control rod shown CAN be changed but it is indicative of deeper areas of neglect  It has been sitting outside in the rain for a long

period of time with no real care.

Caution is the word

Dulux is a brand owned by Akzo Nobel now - don’t see it in aviation anymore. Mostly Jetglo (Sherwon, Cheaper), their pricier sky scapes brand, they want to use Genesis but nope, Imron which is the long lasting granddaddy of paints, awlgrip, and PPG is trying but ….while a few large labels use it, not much. Oh, and alive seen some airlines use Hentzen.

We could use anything - other brands are cheaper but they don’t last as long. We don’t want the hassle with customers. Imron costs a bit more but it’s worth it in the end, specially if you park outside.

Glad to see this thread is still going. I did pass on that aircraft! Thanks to everyone who advised not to go with it. 95k is definitely a lot for it.
