Tim-37419 Posted September 24, 2023 Report Posted September 24, 2023 I thought I read a thread about this but couldn't find it. I am a 500+ hr non instrument rated pilot. I am a third of the way through my ground school and expect to take and pass the written before Thanksgiving. I had my first IFR session with a CFII last week. I have been using Garmin Pilot for 5 or 6 years now, I am very comfortable and happy with it. My question is - should I stick with GP or is there a compelling reason to switch? My thought process is, don't introduce something new to learn unless there is a really compelling reason. I am not asking for a Garmin Pilot vs Foreflight flame war. Quote

Schllc Posted September 24, 2023 Report Posted September 24, 2023 When I started flying regularly I tried both of them for about a year. I use ForeFlight and like it better. but…. I don’t believe it is better, just equally different. my log is in FF and I know it well so I wouldn’t want to switch for any reason. if you have that comfort with Garmin, I see no reason to switch. I didnt find there to be a distinguishable difference in function or ease of use, with I think one exception, If you use a flight stream to update your databases must use Garmin pilot for at least that. if you do it the old way by taking cards to a computer you can use either. 1 Quote
hubcap Posted September 24, 2023 Report Posted September 24, 2023 If you are training for your instrument rating, the last thing I would recommend is to start learning a brand new software. I use Foreflight, but I would recommend sticking with what you know. You are going to have plenty of new stuff to learn. 5 2 Quote
midlifeflyer Posted September 25, 2023 Report Posted September 25, 2023 Short answer: no, there is no compelling reason to switch. Long answer: already given by others. I have used most if the EFBs out there and if I were not a 12+ year Foreflight user, I would have trouble choosing between the two*. (*actually, I'd probably be using Pilot because of the Android capability) 1 Quote
ArtVandelay Posted September 25, 2023 Report Posted September 25, 2023 GP and GTN/G3X interfaces are very similar, for that reason I would go with GP if you have Garmin avionics, otherwise I probably would go with whatever you want based on others opinions, or pricing. 1 Quote

I agree with this. I have GTN (and will add G3X shortly) and an AERA 760 and also have GP for wireless database updates. The interfaces and icons and such are all very similar. That said, I use FF, because when I restarted flying, I got it free through CAP and got used to it. 1 Quote
kortopates Posted September 25, 2023 Report Posted September 25, 2023 I could get FF at a discount but prefer GP, for many things i think it’s superior but FF definitely has more features. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Niko182 Posted September 25, 2023 Report Posted September 25, 2023 They both accomplish exactly the same thing, slightly differently. No need to switch. 1 1 Quote
hammdo Posted September 25, 2023 Report Posted September 25, 2023 Stick with what you know for now… -Don 1 Quote
