I did a gear retraction check on a 1970 F model in the hangar last week and discovered that the gear retracted with the airspeed indicator reading zero. I started looking and could not find an air safety switch nor any evidence that one had been installed. This plane's last two annuals have been with reputable shops that I don't think would miss something like that. I'm new to Mooneys so I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Did Mooney not have an air safety switch on all the early models? Do they get removed if they quit working because they're expensive or difficult to find?

I had the same issue two years ago.  Here's a pic of what my switch looks like; it was mounted behind the panel on the pilots side.  It had stuck closed (if I remember correctly) and the gear would swing with no air pressure on the Pitot.  Similar switches are still being manufactured but they're not cheap.  The Mooney version of the switch was $1500.  Fortunately we were able to get mine working.  Obviously a mechanic would need to verify the P/N and paper trail if you were to buy a new one but I have the POC at World Magnetics if you need it.  I'm not an expert or mechanic, just a guy with some experience in this issue.

On some M20Js the switch is on the back of the airspeed indicator. On some it is up high on the left side under the metal “cowl” under the glareshield.

Thanks for the responses. We took another look at it this morning and found it has a squat switch. I hadn't looked for one as I was under the impression that Mooney only used the air safety switch. The switch and gear are working as they should.

That was a simple fix!
