Hello,

I'm relatively new to airplane ownership having owned my 67 Mooney m20F for a year now. I've already have my share of minor issues and was hoping to make a request on this forum to resolve the latest one.

My ignition switch has failed, specifically the contact from battery to the solenoid so at a minimum I am in need of an ignition switch kit (back terminal plate) or worst case a used ignition switch in its entirety. I know a while back many kits were sold on Ebay. Does anyone have any extra they are willing to part with or know the whereabouts of one? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I should mention it is a Bendix 10 357210-1 type ignition switch

Pictures, part numbers, and great descriptions are always helpful…

But…

First off…

You know the Bendix switch has an OH kit…

How old is your switch?

How many hours?

How many starts?

Might you just want to OH it?

Now… to find an OH kit…

Did you go to Aircraft spruce?

See what a new one costs…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

I think the part number for the repair kit is 10-357515.  Maybe you can find someone on here who has been hoarding one.

Or get a used switch off Ebay.

Thank you for all the responses. Ive found new switches for $600, used ones for $200, and a kit with part number 357515 for $85 on controller. I think I'll go with the kit after @Yetti confirms the part number.

Has anyone replace the switch before? My mechanic is busy until the end of the month and I was thinking of starting the install. I have the top dash removed already and the switch removed from the instrument panel but with all the wires still connected. It seems very difficult to access from the top just looking at it. Looking to find out which way someone has hacked this before.

I’ve not looked at my Mooney, but switches typically have a large nut on the outside, that’s the ring on the outside, unscrew it and push the switch back into the panel, there may be enough wire for it to drop just below the panel or at least far enough back so you can swap wires one at a time.

Of course this is not preventative maintenance.

Depends on the aircraft, the (D) mag was such a bear to access and the switch so easy on my Maule I’d hook the mag timing light to the switch and put the light on the glare shield

Just reread your post, often it means your removing both front seats and laying on your back, looking up under the panel. It’s not as hard as it sounds and Mooney seats are easily removable.

Use caution when buying a used switch…

The internal jumper may be set up differently than the one you have…

The switch is used everywhere for everything, be sure of the small details… both inside and outside…

A simple error can leave the magnetos live all the time… a ground wire not grounded properly…

PP thoughts only, not a mechanic…

I removed the switch and installed the kit a year ago during the wait for engine OH and I can tell you it's not as easy as sounds. Wires were short on my '67F and I am not sure if I could do it without removing the Pilot's side panel or instruments in the vicinity. I was installing G5 and had a new panel made so that was done anyway but I can't see being able to unscrew all the wire terminals at the back.

Going under the panel would possibly allow cutting some harness ties and make wires longer but removing instrument panel was a way for me to go. YMMV. Good luck.

I have had success just taking them apart, cleaning and polishing the contacts and putting them back together with some new grease.

The contacts are quite robust. They can get a bit burned sometimes, but there is enough meat on them to clean them up a few times. After all each cleanup should last 30 years or so.

I wouldn’t try to do any of this in the plane. Take all the wires off and work on it on a bench. There are too many spring loaded parts that you will never find if you try it behind the panel.

I have a pre-owned Bendix Start switch (push to start) 10-357310-1?A (? - I couldn't clearly read that digit) also removed a newer shower of sparks box  10-176487-121 M for Bendix S200 Mags which is probably about 20 years old. A Bendix S200 left Magneto  4xx-ish hours.

these are non-yellow tagged parts but were working when removed.

IT was not where I thought I put it.   May be till next week till I can find it.   Sorry for the delay.   But I would concur with the polishing them like ignition points

If anyone has a Bendix rebuild kit(10-357515), or a gently used switch(10-357210-1), I’d be  interested. I had my first “experience” last week when my switch sorta, kinda worked after stopping for an hour. In time the switch worked well enough to get the engine started, but left me confused since I never experienced a partial switch failure once the engine was hot.
