Yeah, me neither! Those folks who wear the funny mohawked "A" have poor taste in clothing and a blinkered focus on one sport.

My school, however, has won SEC / National Championships in football, basketball, softball, golf, gymnastics and equestrian, and has done well / won events (no idea of scoring, rules, competitions, etc.) with the Student Aviation Teams. And we savor every victory over 'Bama in every sport!

I'm sorry, that was an oversight that would make Bo very unhappy. We win at baseball, too!

Those beautiful, empty rolling hills around Orange County Airport. The undeveloped fields  on the Palms Verdes Peninsula where I would fly my rubber powered, balsa wood airplanes. Sky Trails restaurant at Van Nuys Airport where you could meet celebrities. The great air shows at Torrance where you could see Bob Hoover, Bob Herendeen, Charlie Hilliard, Mira Slovak and Art Scholl all fly the same day. Santa Paula Airport where you could see more vintage than modern airplanes.

Lots of great California memories for sure!

Just got my 2022 San Diego Property Tax Bill for the Mooney.  It went up 56% from 2021 !!!   With inflation reported to be 8-10%, how can Govt. possibly raise taxes 56%?  I'm calling the tax office to bitch on Monday.  Anyone else seeing increases that seem to track the raging aircraft market?  I'm voting with my "pocket book" from this day forward regardless of what else folks are whining about.

Virginia gets me for $5 every year and they follow up like a pit bull.  I guess I am lucky.  I do hate to put the sticker on my plane.

Update.  Finally talked to the San Diego tax rep assigned to my N number.  They use...

 https://aircraftbluebook.com

... to determine values.  Values are updated 1 Jan and as we know, Mooney values have gone up significantly this year (apparently over 50% in my case).  They tax 1% of the assessed value plus some other fees.  If you disagree with the assessed value, here is the link to the Assessment Appeals process, and also a link to the Assessment Appeal Application.

I won't dispute the value this year; unfortunately it's about right; I just don't like the fact that the tax assessor is chasing market values in real time on a 50 year old vehicle and I don't like the fact that they are allowed to increase taxes over 50% in one year regardless of the driver.  Apparently a lot of folks in San Diego have called the tax assessor to appeal.  What's the bottom line for me?  Not much (another 400 AMUs) but I'll rethink trading up to a newer more expensive airplane.

Do you guys have a law to prevent chasing real property value on houses?  Ie to avoid pricing out grandma who’s owned the house for 30 years?  Seems airplane is different?

Absolutely.  The assessed value on my personal residence is based on the purchase price back in the mid '90s.  The same goes for a rental property that I also own that originally served as a primacy residence.

Proposition 13

We get a lot of people moving from CA to where I live in TX. Their first year they are shocked by the property taxes here compared to CA. If it’s in San Antonio, Austin, Dallas or Houston by the time they get all of the taxing authorities on there it’s about 3% of the house value, every year.

The rural areas aren’t as bad. I pay about 1.2% of assessed value after my homestead credit.

But in TX no income tax, right?  That makes the 3% somewhat understandable.

In Georgia, we enjoy all the typical property taxes (and high sales tax), but pay 6% income tax, too.  I'm not sure what we get in return.

We have had a huge influx of people from CA who want to pay asking price+ for real estate, and they all seem to vote just like they did in CA because they don't like Georgia's "lack of services".

WTF??  3% of property value?  How did that happen?

It’s been that way pretty much the 32 years I’ve lived in Texas. The tough part for people that have lived here for years is that the people who’ve moved in from out of state have driven up property values, therefore property taxes. Texas freezes the School tax part of the property tax, which is the biggest part, when people hit 65. But the other parts keep going up.

I mean, good grief, here I am complaining about our property tax being almost 2%.  Sheesh...

In California Prop 13 limits the increase in value to 2%/year regardless of actual market prices for as long as you own the house. Tax rate is 1% (plus a bunch of other crap, like bonds) that raises it to more like 1.2% (dependent on location).  Thing is, they make certain they raise the value every year, but back in the 1980s property values fell...guess what?  They took several years before they got around to lowering the values!!  Of course, when values went back up the tax increase was instantaneous.

Of course, liberal politicians have been trying for years to repeal Prop 13...they're sniffing around the edges by trying to eliminate it for commercial property, then residential rental property, then ALL property.  I suspect they will eventually succeed with at least commercial, and probably residential rental, at some point, I'm afraid.

Fl has something similar, but apparently when the house sells, the rate resets. I bought last year and this year my tax increased about $2,400, which I wasn’t expecting.

Our tax rate is according to the internet .95%

California is an incredibly, stunningly wonderful place to live! I urge all the Californians that emigrated to our miserable, dusty hot and humid Texas to reflect on the luscious vegetation, warm breezes and soothing oceans of your homeland. Perhaps you might consider a return? We will help you pack! ( just a little humor!!)

Fair warning... many if not most of the folks leaving CA were from somewhere else to begin with.  They're just going "home".

I remember private pilot training out of the old Glendale airport. We would do ground reference maneuvers over the orange groves north of Glendale. They went on for almost 10 miles. Not a single one left.

When I was a kid we hiked to the top of Camelback Mtn and I remember looking south  at all the orange groves.   Now it's neighborhoods with a lot of orange trees and roof rats.  ;)
