I'm shopping around to get a GFC500 installed plus a few extras... was quoted $56,000 CDN (approx $44,000 USD) the quote seems a little steep....at least I think so, of course I could be out to lunch?

Heres the work that the quote was for:

"Yes, we could supply and install a GFC500 and a GI 275, a G5 will not interface with the analogue King avionics. The GI 275 will accept one analogue Nav Input. If you replaced either of your Nav/Coms (KY196 and KNS 80, or KX155) with a GNC 255A, the GNC 255A could be interfaced digitally and the traditional NAV via analogue interface.

So…

Supply and install:

GFC 500 3 axis with electric pitch trim

GI 275 with GMU 11 magnetometer and GTP 59 OAT

GNC 255A Com/Nav

C$56,510"

Maybe thats a fair quote...but if not, I'm not opposed to flying south a spend a few weeks golfing while an install is done :).

+1 for @Baker Avionics

Greg is around here often…

Always helpful in Mooney installation questions…

If you can visit him at his shop easily… it would be worth stopping by…

Best regards,

Thanks...its just a "short" hop away :)

Greg is across the country from me…

He has shared a lot of pics and details, and direct contact with suppliers…

Having him nearby would be great.

Best regards,

It may be a little steep.  Just for reference, I have recently installed a GNC 355.  It was $8640.88 including labor.  I am currently in line to have a GFC500 as well as a G5 attitude indicator to drive the autopilot.  I have been quoted $3638.46 for the G5 which includes labor and $12010.34 for the GFC 500 (3 axis including trim) that does not include labor, I don't believe.  So for something comparable to what you are doing I have spent so far around $24,000 and change.  That does not include labor for the autopilot but I seriously don't think it would be $20,000 in labor to install the autopilot (at least I hope not).  So maybe this helps you with a reference....  This is all US dollars.

Thanks...appreciate the comparables. I've sent emails to a few of the recommended dealers in the US...see what they come back with :)

Do me a favor, shoot me this in an email and send pics of the panel as well and I will quote it out and let you know if it seems fair or in line with us.  If that will help.

I asked a reputable shop around my area (keep in mind, these are higher-than-normal "New York" prices), and was quoted roughly $36kUSD (equal to roughly C$46,165) to install.  So your C$56.5k is roughly equal to $44,100USD at today's exchange rate, which seems rather high.  I would shop elsewhere.

I agree and for a dual GI275 (and everything else) we were less than the $44,100.00 USD estimate.

two GI 275, GFC 500 with pitch trim and YD...46k US, included changing cracked pulleys and removing  vacuum system, DME and broke storm scope. also included re trimming empennage and weighing aircraft. New England Labor prices.

Mike

both 275s have batteries and are reversionary.

That sounds like a great plan.  You’ll love the GFC500…especially with YD…unless you’re already familiar.

I just had mine done at LASAR in northern California. Overall they did a great job, and less than your shop quoted.   They specialize in Mooneys.

I had installed: GFC500, two GI275s (one ADAHRS, one HSI), GSB-15, new panel lighting, new LED wingtip strobes, new PS Engineering intercom - I was out the door at $39k and change.

Existing equipment to interface to GNS530W, GTX345 and some old king radios.  They were able to use my existing electric trim system so I didn't have to buy the Garmin version.

They had to remove the old Century IIB and vacuum system of course. The auto pilot install is a lot of work.

Did you end up with just 1 adhrs in the airplane and no other adi?

That had to be a special or they lost money for sure on that.  Sorry, but that is the truth.  I used to be the Avionics and General Manager there before I started my own Repair Station here in So. Oregon.  You got a heck of deal and they lost money for sure.  Just my 2 cents

Interesting that you could keep the electric trim, which kind was it and is the GFC500 coupled to it for automated trim?

Yes the GFC500 is coupled to it. I don't really know what kind it is, it was in the airplane when I bought it 15 years ago and I haven't had to do anything with it since.

It isn't coupled to the trim, I can pretty much guarantee that.  It is not able to.  You may still have your electric trim but it is not Auto Trim.  Please clarify.

I don't know about that. They quoted, I accepted. I didn't pressure them on price at all. The final tally with things I added as we went was almost exactly half parts and half labor. They didn't complain and neither did I.
