Can anyone tell me if it's possible to connect a G5 HSI to a KX165? I know the KX165 is analog and the G5 is digital, but are there any adapters available to connect them?

Thanks

The G5 / GAD29 has only ARINC / Serial inputs and you can't connect legacy radios. KX165's still have resale value and sooner or later you will run into display issues. If yo want to install a G5 it might be time to upgrade the NAVCOM. On the other hand Aspen works with legacy radios.

The GI275 will connect to a KX165.

I have a King KX 175 connected to a GI 275, it’s the way to go for legacy connectivity.  My understanding is the G5 can only interface with Digital Garmin radios like the 255 and their more modern GPSs.

Thanks for the replies guys.

The reason behind my question is that I intend to upgrade my panel (again).

I currently have two G5s The G5 HSI is driven by a GNS 430W. I also have a KX165 connected to a G206B. I would like to replace one G5 with a 7"G3X. So, since I will only need one G5 for backup, I was wondering if I could connect the other G5 to the 165.

I like the KX165 a lot, and I just had the screen replaced by Mid-Continent with LCD. So I'm not intending to get rid of it any time soon.

One thing to consider is that with your panel, you probably rarely use the NAV function of the KX 165.  I had a similar setup (but with an Aspen rather than two G5s) and never needed the NAV displayed on the Aspen (even though it was hooked up). The simplest thing to do would be to keep the external CDI as a backup instrument. (I'm not sure what a G206B is; did you by chance mean a GI 106B?).

Ah, yes Skip. I did mean a GI 106B.

I use the com side of the KX165 all the time, I actually prefer it to the 430. But I never use the nav side of the 165. It’s there purely for back-up.

My original question came from the fact I will probably have two G5s when I upgrade the panel with a G3X. Even though I don’t use it, I would rather have the Nav side of the KX165 driving a G5 HSI, then a GI106A; since I’m going to have an extra G5 anyway.

I understand your point - but Garmin didn’t build it that way. I would just sell the extra G5 and keep the GI 106B, or replace the 106B with a GI 275. I liked my KX 165 also, but decided to replace it with a GNC 255A just because with everything else new, I just knew it would crap out ;)

I probably will just keep the 106B.

I think the moral of the story is: Really, really try and plan out your new panel, and do it all in one hit. Rather then piece-meal.

Avionics used to be simple: each box did one thing and there were minimal connections between them and all the interfaces mostly followed industry standards so it was possible to mix and match.

It's more complex, now.

Garmin is notorious for creating proprietary interfaces that don't play well with other manufacturers. But, even within the Garmin product line, there are incompatibilities. Consider that Garmin uses mostly RS-232, ARINC 429, HSDB (Proprietary Ethernet) and CAN bus physical interfaces. Garmin uses RS-232 as a general purpose interface and creates a protocol for every new purpose. For the G3X for instance, Garmin lists the following: Aviation In, Aviation In/NMEA & VHF out, CO detector, Connext 3400 baud, Connext 57600 baud, Garmin Instrument Data, Garmin VHF Comm, Garmin VHF Nav/Comm, GTS Instrument Data, GTX TIS-A In, GTX TIS-A In/NMEA & VHF Out, Lightning Detector, MapMX, NMEA Out.

John,

The GI-275 is a much newer and more capable instrument.  It costs more to buy than a G5, but you don't need to buy and install a GAD29B box to interface with your KX165.  It takes time and space to install this box, by the time you are finished, I doubt there is much difference in the overall price.

Thanks Aerodon.

Since I only intend to use the KX 165 NAV as a backup, I've decided to just keep the 106B.

John

That’s what I would do in your situation.

The KX165s often show Radial info on their screen… as well…

It sort of has its own back-up display designed into it…. :)

It can tell you what radial you are on, and displays Right and Left of a particular radial…(?)

Its been so long since I used it… it may be an incorrect memory.

Something to look into, possibly…

The Kx165 was at the beginning of the digital revolution for avionics… in the 90s…

Best regards,

Yes, it can show the radial information.  But that ability is limited to certain connected CDIs, not all will allow the radial to be shown.

Thanks David!

The 90s BK panel system is so highly integrated…

It looks like eight individual instruments and a trio of nav radios…

Yet almost everything shares a wire or two…

And two way communication between one device and the next can happen when least expected (by the forgetful end user)… :)

Best regards,
