Jeff_S Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Hello all, I'm toying with some panel changes, moving from my 480/MX20 combo up to something different. I've played around extensively with the simulators for the GTN750 and the G500/600 and I have a specific question related to the following: I fly quite a bit of VFR because it's generally easier to navigate the Atlanta Bravo airspace that way. The MX20 has a great feature that will show the airspace floor/ceiling numbers right on the map for any sector that you're approaching, if you're within a caution range of busting those altitudes. I have played around with every setting I can find in the G500/GTN750, and I can't make either one of them do this. On both systems you have to position the cursor and then hit a button to get the airspace info. So, am I missing something, or is this just the way they work?
M016576 Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 the 480/mx20 combo is pretty hard to beat... I have a 430, which works well, but I think many folk out there actually prefer the 480. It would be hard for me to justify moving up to anything, unless you were planning on going straight to the 750. I don't think you'll actually gain any capability... just a nicer interface.
thinwing Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 The big differene is the Primary Flight Display half of the g500/600 and its reliable ,weight saving air data and attitude reference computers. You would be getting rid of your spinning gyros and using an interface box drive your autopilot. The Question I would ask is can you interface your 480 with the g500/g600 and use it instead of a 430/530 gn 750 gps navigators...kpc
Jeff_S Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 The 480 will integrate just fine with the G500/600 series. However, it will not cross-fill with the GTN750. And I do love my 480, don't get me wrong. I've studied the GTN750 quite a bit, and from my normal use case scenario I can't see anything it does better than a 480, except the touch screen interface seems cool. And while there are some differences between the MFD capabilities of the GTN750 and the MX20, for my use case the MX20 is more than sufficient. The reason I'm toying with ideas is to start planning for the BIG MIGRATION to ADS-B and upgrade some of the other components in the panel, like the older KX-155 and the KT-76A, and the secondary KLN89B backup GPS. It's probably a ways off but I had some time on a rainy Labor Day to start musing. And one thing I noticed was the big discrepancy in how airspace floor/ceiling data, which I use a lot, is presented on the newer MFDs. That's what led to my question.
Bennett Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 I have a GTN750, a 430W, and a 696 mounted in an AirGizmo panel mount. The Class B / C rings show up much more distinctively on the 696, but it is really not hard to put your finger on a specfic ring on the GTN750. I fly out of San Carlos, CA (KSQL) where we have a strangely shapped class B (San Francisco) and two class Cs (Oakland and San Jose). I have no problem picking my way through when VFR using either the 696 or the GTN750. The GTN 750 is much more than just a touch screen updated 530. I find it a seriously useful tool. I have the remote transponder and remote audio panel, and not only does that free up a great deal of panel space, but they are both "state of the art". For what is worth I have added an Icarus SAM GPSSn coupler between the GTN 750 and the KAP 150 autopilot, and I am amazed at how well they work together to follow complex flight plans. I like to hand fly, but when busy with other issues in the airplane (like traffic), the combination listed above does the job, probably better than I would do manually. I have photos posted under Bennett's Photos.

docket Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 I don't think you can configure it to display that data in the settings menu. I am no expert, however, as I only have about two months of experience behind the 750/650

Steve Dawson Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 Just bought a GTN 750 with the remote audio panel and transponder but with my 78 J and the structural supports are in the way. The installer had to move the 750 to the lowest part of the radio panel. I believe it would fit higher and in closer eye site if it was moved to the centre so the back of the radio would sit between the Y of the support. I would have to move the 2 instruments at the right (Currently an JPI 830 and Stormscope) to the right of the radio. This would facilitate moving my other radio under the 750 and leaving the middle right stack open for the vacuum gage, panel lights and the Area. Any thoughts on this relocation? PS: (Since this picture the transponder and audio panel have been replaced with remotes)
flyboy0681 Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 I would have thought that the supports were the same for all J's, but I guess not.
jetdriven Posted September 23, 2011 Report Posted September 23, 2011 There is a vertical support in that area between the Stormscope/JPI and the radio. It's not possible to move the radio to that spot.
