Wing Walk: Paint vs 3M Stick On

It IS like a welcome mat!

The early impressions start with the handle, step, and wing walk...

Then fixing the split seat covering, and ragged door welting that gets the calms the next round of questions... 

Imagine a remote control on Rob’s electric step... extending in a really welcoming fashion...

I'll "third" that request. Paging @Keith20EH, how did you get that smooth border? Did you paint it first, then mask over the border section when you painted the wing walk material on?

Sorry for the delay, can’t surf the web from low earth orbit.  It is really quite simple, the black tape edging was in good shape, so I masked to the inside edge with 3m blue painters tape and brushed to the edge.  Remove the blue tape while still wet.  I am all for restoring and rebuilding, but don’t need to fix what is not needing fixed.  On to the next thing while waiting on Lycoming cylinders...

I used the custom length option and 24" width. I bought 6 feet..

 

Before taking off the old wing walk I used poster board and traced a template so I could use it to mark and cut the new wing walk material. This stuff sticks amazingly well so it's helpful to have a second person to hang on to the other end it as you are applying it. 

(If the old wing walk is still there but just faded you can save a lot of work by just masking it off and just spraying it with flat black paint.)

I had a small fuel leak on one of the top access panel screws, resulting in my wingwalk peeling off during flight. 

I repaired the pinhole leak, cleaned up the area, ordered some Koffler anti skid and finished off with a flat black coat to make it all match.

Came out just fine, and that Koffler anti skid is really a great product. It has a rubber type bottom to it, and the adhesive is really strong! Thanks @LANCECASPER for the recommendation.

Take a look at the ultrawing walk Spruce sells and look up “herculiner”.  See any resemblance? Sold in the aviation aisle at any auto parts store for $25 a quart cheaper.

For a nice clean sharp edge, mask the edge with 3M UltraFine tape.  It is pale green.  Nothing bleeds under it.

Then use blue tape to attach the paper or plastic you use to mark off the rest of the plane.

Paint shops have a rack, that as you pull the paper masking off the roll, it applies the tape to one edge.

This is actually key. I had some idiot (another USAF pilot) actually step on my flap to climb up and look in.  Funny that I needed the SB to reinforce the cracked flap/spar connection that year?! My kids are experts and will never step on an airplane control surface!

Forget the placard.
SOP for me is to leave the flaps down, automatically prevents this.

Leaving the flaps down is a good idea. But the placard is still required -- it's in the limitations section of the AFM/POH.
