RobertGary1 Posted November 26, 2019 Report Posted November 26, 2019 I haven’t renewed in many years I guess they figure I can’t turn down socks Quote
Bob_Belville Posted November 26, 2019 Report Posted November 26, 2019 I recently received a 50 year AOPA membership lapel pin from them... but no socks! Don't ya just hate it when the newbies are treated better than the faithful. 2 2 Quote
Tony Starke Posted November 27, 2019 Report Posted November 27, 2019 I haven't been a member since they featured Bruce Jenner on the cover. I've been offered a ball cap to renew. I guess I'll wait for the cuff links. 1 Quote
Skates97 Posted November 27, 2019 Report Posted November 27, 2019 A couple years ago I traded the AOPA membership for an EAA membership. Really enjoy the EAA magazine each month. 4 Quote

carusoam Posted November 27, 2019 Report Posted November 27, 2019 Lee, your jealousy is showing! When signing up for AOPA, I checked the turbine box... for the free extra pages of turbine section... No fancy socks came with that though... What triggers the free gift? Best regards, -a- Quote

I filled out some survey and apparently an ATP and a type rating or two automatically triggers the turbine edition. After a few phone calls that did nothing, an intervention by one of the AOPA Pilot editors got me back into the regular issue. I wanted the eye candy on the cover to be things I really wanted to fly for fun. Edited November 27, 2019 by Pasturepilot 2 Quote

Best regards, -a- They’ve been slowly upping the gifts since I’ve not been renewing. I just don’t feel like I get the value out of it anymore. I can fly any of a number of planes when I want so I no longer sit around and fantasize about flying. If I’m going to read it’s going to be a good book not a magazine i also got turned off when they started nickel and diming each service (legal, medical, etc). Btw if you’re looking for a good pilot book you have to read Fate is the Hunter. -Robert 1 Quote

They even have sock subscription services where you get a different type of sock each week in the mail. -Robert Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted November 27, 2019 Report Posted November 27, 2019 I ferried Eric J's Mooney when it belonged to AOPA. I actually got a big check from AOPA! Who else ever got money from them? 1 Quote
steingar Posted November 27, 2019 Report Posted November 27, 2019 (edited) I was an AOPA member for quite a few years. But I’ve started to think about what these associations do for me beyond cash my check. For AOPA I can’t come up with so much. Edited November 28, 2019 by steingar 3 Quote

If I had to give up one, I would drop AOPA in a heartbeat, but I’ll stay an EAA member for the rest of my life. Even though I fly professionally, EAA seems to represent me and my interests more than AOPA does. AOPA is trying to be diversified to fit everyone under its tent. EAA continues to be grass-roots GA. The only reason I continue with my AOPA membership is because I’m the Airport Support Network volunteer for my airport. 1 Quote

And why not both? I'd get kicked out of the CB club for sure! 1 Quote
