GNC-355 GPS/Com question

I installed a  GNC-355 about a month ago and having problems with the configuration dumping on me. I was wondering if anyone else experienced same problem. It is  weird it doesn't seem to dump all configuration primarily the mic gain. And of course it's when I am going into tower controlled airport or ATC. Not too certain about the GNC-355 but I think it's using some sort of sdr (software define radio) circuitry. I just don't understand why they would set the mic gain all the way low spectrum. When I installed my GNC-255 (Nav Com) several  years ago it worked right out of the box. I am guessing that mic gain , rx squelch ,  carrier squelch,  side tone  volume are good old potentiometers electronic circuitry on the GNC-255?
