Autothrottles

On board weather

Traffic and terrain alerts

Magenta Lines and much more, but no autothrottle.

The technology has been on the shelf for many years, ie DC3-1958

German ME,  end of WW2, and has been a common feature on airliners for decades.

My F150 is so equipped with its own cruise control and a common Vendor named Garmin has equipped the G5000 Citation.

So, I continue to wonder how long light Gen. Aviation will continue without this fuel saving, increased engine life, on the shelf device?

Am I spoiled or what?

Lindberg did it with a compass and used a  watch to change fuel tanks.

Auto-mixture control for Mooneys has been around for a couple of years...

Servo controlled, EGT monitoring...

 For piston aircraft, especially certified models, I doubt the juice is worth the squeeze.

I like the topic for a few reasons.  Anthony alluded to our Auto-Lean system. It has been available for a few years and is like a baby brother to an auto throttle.  We also have a simplex autothrottle running on the bench, based on certified hardware.  Not surprisingly, it looks much like Auto-Lean.  Light weight, simple, relatively inexpensive.  Not quite ready for a Mooney, but ready to test in a fixed pitch experimental aircraft.  However, as Tom, RW and Ross alluded to, It’s not clear to me that there is a market for even a low cost solution.  It feels like people are happy to manage power manually.  When I started on the Auto-Lean, a developer of one of the original GA FADECS warned me of this. I would certainly love to hear what folks would want in a GA autothrottle or mixture control either here or PM me to talk off line.

I'm proud to say I have a lot of hours in the Aeronca, no electrical system and no GPS at that time. I did travel all around California with pilotage and dead reckoning. I won't lie, there were a few times weather closed in and my navigation got a bit scary. I used to try to follow VOR's; they're great for piotage as they are easily seen from the air.

I'm working on one at the moment for an experimental autolanding system. For certified aircraft, would need around 200 orders to make it worthwhile. Estimate it would cost around 15k a unit.

Is it just auto throttle, or does it include "fadec" as well? Will the $15k be installed?
