not really a mooney specific question - but I want to fly in to some nice airport that is close to a scenic area and stay there for a few days over this long weekend.

Being in Massachusetts, I have already been to all the cape cod islands - so those are out. I was thinking bar harbor, maine (KBHB) - but I have been in that area by car before. Another one was Wiscasset, Maine (KIWI) near Boothbay, maine - that I havent been to - but dont know how scenic/good that place is.

Any other place? Something scenic in Virginia or North Carolina - maybe?

thanks in advance.

There are some interesting little Boros around Rockland Maine (RKD). Also, Stonington ME (93B) and Isleboro ME (57B) have various types of lodging and both have "little airports" <2500ft if you're comfortable with that...

W45 OR kTGI. both in the MD-VA area. 2.5 from where you are. W45 is a breathtaking mountain-valley landing. Great golf course right by the runway, 4 bed and breakfasts and prehistoric caverns. KTGI is a bike riding, seafood fest. Watch it, the runway is a little rugged. Ross (shadrach) below is familiar with these places I am sure.

Have fun this weekend!!

KBHB is good, but ground transportation is expensive 40 bucks into Bar Harbor one way !!, Not a lot going on near the airport. Try KSFM , great dinner on the field, and low cost trolly service into Wells beach and area beaches. Great seafood, but call around first its busy up there during holidays if your staying overnight. Have fun.

some great suggestions - 93B runway is too small for me - rest look good. I think I like KTGI the best - love the sea and bicycles - awesome - thanks !

Yes I am familiar with both KTGI and W45. KGTI had a new runway installed not too long ago, it's shorter than it was previously but still no problem and in great shape. Luray is a lot of fun, the mountains can make for some bumps on descent.  Ground transport was an issue for us at Luray. One cab in town, which took us to a skyline drive trailhead. After our hike we tried to call the cab... No cell service in those mountains regardless of network... we had to hitch hike out!

Thats were I am right now.......Bar Harbor.  Of course, it wasn't my idea to be here, but my employers.  We actually spend every summer in and out of here as they have homes in Winter Harbor.  We always fly into Bar Harbor, drop off the pax, then fly the airplane to Bangor were she is put to bed.  No hangar space in Bar Harbor for a Falcon 900 and our baby is never left outside no matter what!!  Even forecast severe clear, the owner never wants it left out.

I am in love with this area and other than being in the western part of the US in the mountains, this place is the best.  I love the climate here also.

Has anybody ever been to Put-In Bay, OH?  I was thinking of doing a "daycation" there with my wife or perhaps Mackinac, MI which we have been to many times, but it is not just a hop skip and a jump for a daycation, it is more suited for a weekend since it would be nearly a 3 hour flight.  I have heard that Put-In Bay is a nice area, but that was many moons ago.  Any recent visitors there?

The new runway at TGI is now 2400ft.  Very smooth.  The town is charging a $10 landing few to pay for the renovations.  You pay at the trailer at the airport entrance or stuff the bill in the honor box.  The island baked crab at Lorraine's is excellent.

If you're thinking of NC, go to Outer Banks (KMQI). Great beach, plenty of things to do (go to Ocracoke, W95, for the day). Probably a mad-house over the 4th holiday, but a great place to visit.

Hey Brett,

My wife is from the town right across the sound from Mackinac Island, St Ignace. We have been going there for 15 years. The runway is great, the water is clear and don't eat too much fudge. A 1st clas destination. the runway is great. Just an awesome place to go!!

Yes - we have been to Put In Bay and we loved it. We rented a house from Ron Borchert (fellow Ovation owner) and parked the plane outside our front door. Great week. You can find their house on VRBO and contact Ron thru MAPA.

Mike,

Thank you for that information.  I am also a member of MAPA, so I will look him up.  Just looking for an overnight or possibly a weekend to get the wife away from the kids for a bit.

John,

We used to go to Mackinac every summer for 10 years when I flew for 84 Lumber with our Falcon 50.  We were always the biggest airplane on the ramp.  What an amazing airplane that was and thankfully the runway up there allowed for a real flat approach from either end so we could stick it right on the end of the runway.  Of course we had to carry enough fuel to get over to PLN (no fuel at Mackinac) then fly back over to MCD to stay and leave with pax.  I always loved calling for a taxi there and hearing the "clip clop" coming up the hill to the airport.  One of the most fantastic places to visit!!  Definitely me and my wife's favorite place (on somebody eleses dollar).  We always stayed either at the Grand Hotel or my favorite was the Lilac Tree right on Main Street.  Fudge Central.  I knew I was in a different land when I saw the UPS guy walking beside a horse and buggy with a bunch of boxes on it.  Laughing

Went to Mackinac Island (MCD) two years ago and had a wonderful experience.  It is quite a bit farther than Put-In-Bay.  Made a couple trips to Put-In-Bay for day trips.  No lights for evening departures.  A couple folks I know in Cincinnati said they prefer Kellys Island (89D) over Put-In-Bay.  Two of my favorite locations on the easc coast are Tangier Island and Ocracoke.
