It's hard to be really creative with tail #s since only 1 or 2 letters are permitted and they must be the last character(s).

I Love hearing about the history of the tail number. I'm just completing a purchase on my first plane: C- GLJA. I didn't really think about it until last week, but the letters are actually the initials of two of the most important men in my like:
My Uncle (Gary Lee) - who was like a second Father to me, and was a long time hunting partner until he passed 6 years ago. and, 
My Father (James Arthur) - who gave me the "bug" to fly when I was 4. 

I know they will always be flying and watching over me, regardless.

So getting serious, a new vernatherm arrived late today and we got started on the swap out. Lynn should finish in the morning and I'll reinstall the oil filter and the cowl and make a test flight. The vernatherm is 2 revs newer than the old one so maybe it will be a charm. Both are stamped 85C (185F). As I think about the data I really don't think the valve has been closing as it should at 185F. 

@Sabremech @AGL Aviation @Guitarmaster @Marauder I also worked on the baffles so I am pretty optimistic that the oil temp will look better.

How were you able to maintain the smaller registration numbers, as I read the requirements, the smaller registration numbers are no longer allowed once the acft receives a new paint job with few exceptions...only asking because I'd like to keep the smaller registration numbers myself when my 66 gets repainted.. TIA

Regulations allow smaller numbers on aircraft 30 years or older. They are not valid for international flight, but larger vinyl numbers can be used for those trips.

So is this just a poorly written statement: 

An aircraft displaying marks at least 2 inches high before November 1, 1981 and an aircraft manufactured after November 2, 1981, but before January 1, 1983, may display those marks until the aircraft is repainted or the marks are repainted, restored, or changed

It leads me to believe, since a comma was used as opposed to a period, that when you repaint, restore or change, it has to go to 12"

So the regulations have been updated in the last several decades. What you posted above is how it used to be.

Please refer to CFR 14.45.22 (b), a screenshot is appended below including (a) for your reference. Or look it up yourself.

 

P.S.--A "small U.S.-registered aircraft built at least 30 years ago" describes every Mooney built before 27 January 1995, and Bob's 1965 (?) E was repainted in 2018.

If memory serves, before this repainting, his E had the large 12" numbers down both sides, in accordance with the old, superceded regulations that you referenced above. No, I don't know when, and I don't care.

It's still in there under 45.29 Size of Marks (b) 1-i which is what is confusing me
