Hi All, I am trying to find a decent Mooney Rocket for a friend. I have looked at a few. Just wondering if anyone knows of any that are for-sale that might not be advertised.

Also a few questions for those that have them.

Did they all have GW increases? The one I saw this weekend had a GW of 3017lbs.

Did most have Long range Tanks?

Typical low UL around 800lbs?

Did Rocket certify the prop de-ice?

Were there any that were FIKI?

Looking in the 125-150k price range.

Thanks!

All rockets have a GW increase- it's part of the STC.

U/L is typically 1100lbs on a rocket... at least that's what it is on my missile.  The rocket / missile stc's are particularly attractive imo because in general they have relatively good U/L's for mooneys.

My missile has TKS with a prop slinger, Erik's rocket does too.  Not sure how many others do.  I don't think any of the installs are technically "FIKI", (even if they originally were) since the airframe has undergone a major STC... that's certainly open for debate- and I am often wrong.

Most of the missiles and rockets I've seen has had the long range tank mod.  My missile had it performed before the conversion, so I can't verify that it came with the STC.

hope that helps!

Seek out AviatorEB / Erik for some Rocket details.  He has recently posted a few pictures with a four bladed MT prop.

Rockets have Lots of HP, anti ice, extra fuel, four seats...  very capable.

Exact details would depend on the plane that is for sale.

Thanks Guys!

N305G looks really nice on controller! I might give him a call. One could fly that for a long time and still have a really nice airplane after several years.

Can I put the 520 on my E! Lol. So smooth!! I want a rocket now!! It's a single engine C340!!

Cheers!!

There is a lot written around here regarding turbo ops.  LOP, intercoolers, presssure controllers and the like...

If you decide to go high often, a TKS Rocket could be the ticket.  Next stop is a long body...  compare to the factory 252 and after market 262.

TKS rockets are nice!  Finding one is the trick!

A buddy has N305G listed, but I think it is above the budget. Very nice example, though.

It's nice for sure, but parts of the wings have been reskinned twice, replacing some ribs the second time around  and the empenage replaced with a used, and it sat for 3 years.

A TKS rocket rocks.

I am not sure, but a M20k that had FIKI before rocket conversion could still be interpreted as FIKI?  Only the 252, not the 231, could get fiki, but not all tks on a 252 is fiki.  There is not a lot of difference other than an extra pump and paper work proving it is fiki.  the coverage and flow rates and tank sizes are the same.  One needs a second electric source.  Anyway, no 231's qualified.  Once converted to a rocket a former 231 rocket or a former 252 rocket are very similar other than minor details about smooth belly (maybe) etc.  Speed, performance, operation, etc are pretty similar once converted.

Mine is a former 231-rocket with tks, and so it qualifies as inadvertent deice and that is good enough for me since I don't go looking for trouble.  I go looking to avoid trouble and to get away from trouble.

Yes, I got the 4 blade mt prop that has lots of benefits.  That is another thread but yes it is tks equipped.

Matt by the way they do not all have LR tanks - mine did not have LR tanks the entire 6 years I have owned it so far and in fact it is at Weepnomore this very minute having LR tanks installed.  My mission changed slightly in that two of my three boys went off to college so moving forward, I will enjoy a mission of longer legs rather than easier flexibility with fuel weight.

BTW, you saw there's one in the classifieds here, I assume?

side question, our 231 doesn't have a hot prop but a lot of the 231/252/and rockets do. What IS the advantage of a hot prop without tks anyway?

Hot props can shed ice to continue to produce full power while trying to climb out of a freezing situation.  Uneven ice shedding can really unbalance the prop.

icing is a multi prong problem.  Power and lift/drag/weight.

Not a perfect situation. But having some money is a lot better than being penniless...

I got into some ice in a 172 once.  It collected on the prop, which was noticeable with strong vibrations.   There was no choice but to throttle back.  --Slowing down is not what you want to do when your getting loaded up with ice.  Also not a lot of fun when you are at the MEA.  I knew my next plane would have a hot prop.

I have a hot prop on my 231 and pre-flight it if there is any possibility that I might encounter ice. i.e. any flight near freezing level.   Fortunately my icing encounters have been far and few with my 231.  --But, I've had it happen in August.  One little cloud that I could mostly see through at 18,000 over Gunnison Co.
