I'm looking to upgrade to a Rocket. I have a unique M20F that I am very attached to and I know that I will not be able to replace once I let it go. I have absolutely no idea what to ask for it or how to go about selling it as there are no similar models on the market (extremely clean with a LoPresti cowl, GNS530, powerflow exhaust, et cetera).

I'm leaning towards buying the Rocket outright and getting to where I fall out of love with the F and am more comfortable selling it. Though there is also the option of listing it for an asking price that may be a little steep and waiting to see if there's a buyer out there who wants my specific configuration.

The other thing is that my engine is very close to TBO. It runs strong and the dilemma is whether to sell it with the timed out engine, upgrade from a shop or do a field overhaul, which I don't think it needs yet.

If you don't need the money right away and can keep it running on a regular basis, I'd put a higher price on it. The average person will think it's too much but the right buyer who knows the costs involved with the cowling will understand. Price it fairly adjusting for engine time.

Immediately start a thread in the for sale area.

Check out how the other nice for sale threads are organized.

Leave a note at the top of your thread where the price would normally go.  Price TBD.  Put a date when you think you will have that by.

Check in with the folks at AAA.  Since you are looking to both sell and buy a Mooney, they can be very helpful... yes they charge a fair amount.  But, they save a fair amount too.  Your life gets easier when it becomes a wash...

When trying to determine a price, there are some major resources like All American.  They put the price lists together based on their experience, Mapa and the others were the source of printing and distributing.

I can't believe you didn't get involved in the My F is faster than your J thread...:)

Go Rocket!  http://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/list/?pcid=17527&dlr=1

compare Rocket vs. 252 vs. Bravo vs. Ovation on that page...

I am pretty sure that a conversation with Dave and Jimmy doesn't cost anything.  The advice and tidbits of info can be priceless.  Make sure that the Rocket is what you want and stay to that idea.  There are other planes like newer LONG BODIES that can draw your attention away...

If you can, go visit.  Call/email before you go to make sure what you want to see will be actually there.

Moving up to a Mooney that better fits your Mission is rewarding.  It won't feel sinful to let the old steed move on to another MSer...

Get ready to fix all the small details that you have been meaning to take care of. A good detailing can't hurt.  Get ready for every bump and bruise to be pointed out.  Expect somebody to type something that can be mis-interpreted...

Best regards,

-a-

Best way to sell a Mooney? Price it right.

Then all that is left is to find the right replacement.  It was worth it to me to settle on Model, Features, Condition, and Budget of the next plane before selling this plane.  It allowed me to quickly move on the right plane once the sale on the existing went through.

BTW... I love my 252.

Wisdom!

Two things sell planes:  Paint and price!

It took me about 15 minutes to sell my F a couple of years ago. I casually mentioned I might sell it here, and immediately received an inquiry asking how much. The 15 minutes came in when I thought about "what would I sell if for and what, knowing what I know about the plane, would I pay for it" I responded with "If it were me, I would pay xx for it." a few minutes later, I got a response saying pending ppi, he would take it.

Simple, fast, honest. She is in good hands with a great new steward. I loved my F also. I kissed my wife the first time in her, and she has been part of my life for 15 years.

Sounds like a nice plane but why would you even consider a field overhaul if you intend to sell it?  As a buyer I would be thinking you "Cheaped out", I don't know your mechanic.  If the plane is in awesome shape it deserves a name brand overhaul to complete the package.  Price accordingly.

Digitize all maintenance records from day 1, including all STCs and 337s.  Every mod should have a corresponding STC or 337,

Make sure the aircraft is located somewhere easily reached by airline.

Make sure you can be reached without fail during normal business hours!  I have tried to purchase an aircraft from someone too busy to answer the phone and it's no fun.  If you don't have time to answer the phone, field questions, and show the aircraft, list it with a professional.

Take lots of pictures of everything you can think of, inside and out.

Have a friend look it over with a critical eye and report back to you ALL flaws no matter how minor.  Fix those of any significance.  Be prepared to talk about each flaw with a buyer.

Make sure the last annual was from an MSC.

A nice looking, IFR equipped, squawk free airplane with a recent QUALITY annual, fairly priced will sell immediately.  People are looking right now for such an aircraft.

When I was looking to buy, I started on TradeAPlane and Controller.com, and I kept ending up back at All american Aircraft.  Their ads on Controller seemed to be the best to me.  I called Jimmy, and he spent an hour on the phone with me, explaining the subtle differences between the models.  They are one of the few places that a buyer can see several models in the same place, and they're well known by banks, etc.  They have instructors in place for check-outs, and are easy to reach (just outside San Antonio).

I might start with them.
