We just got a 1999 Bravo and have a question about the Moritz gauge back lights. Only 5 of the 12 LCDs providing the digital displays will light when the instrument panel light control is off. They all light when the variable control is turned on, starting very dim and then getting brighter. Even with the variable light control on full, the back light is not as bright as when the instrument light control is turned off.

Does anyone know how the back light is controlled on the Moritz gauge? It seems that it is supposed to be very bright if the instrument light variable control is off for daytime use and then get dim when the variable control is turned on for nighttime use. Has anyone fixed this issue or had it fixed?

We can just turn the instrument lights on full brightness but it is not as bright as when the control is turned off.

I believe there is a company that services the Moritz Gauges.  Many owners are trending towards a full JPI 9X0 replacement.

you might use the search function to find Moritz gauge service.

Best regards and Welcome aboard,

Thanks for the input. I should have added that I spent quite a bit of time searching the forum and reading what I could find but did not find this problem discussed or a clear understanding of where to get them fixed, if possible.

We are considering a JPI EDM-930 (as we have on one of our Rockets) but want to give the Moritz a chance before changing it. The instrument cluster seems to work well except for the LCD back light.

Based on what others have experienced the Moritz gauges don't have support any longer. They start going out one at a time and then you're faced with a panel re-do with a JPI-930 or an MVP-50 usually. As people pull the Moritz gauges out during upgrades they show up on eBay from time to time and then people try to buy them and piece them together until the inevitable upgrade.

We send Moritz equipment from Cirrus to Radiant Power Corp in Florida for repair, not a cheap option.

I believe Radiant bought the remaining stock of parts from Moritz when Moritz decided to get out of the GA business.  Radiant has a website so they should be easy to contact.

Just my opinion, but repairing the Moritz gauges is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as it's going down. Every penny you put into repairing the Moritz gauges could be put toward a better long term solution (JPI 930 or MVP50)

Thanks for the input. I have called Radiant Power Corp but so far have only been able to leave messages.

Also, thanks to the group in general about all of the info here. I knew about the Moritz issue before we purchased the Bravo and expected we would install the EDM-930 one day. The rest of the aircraft was in good enough shape that it seemed worth it. Right now all that is not working on the two Moritz clusters is the LCD back light so I am reluctant to pull it yet.

I will let you know what I hear from Radiant.

By back light, do you mean the light that makes it readable in daylight?  The digital readout on my OT has gotten hard to read like in daylight, like it is dimmed or something.

Yes, those are the back lights I am trying to fix. When in daylight, 7 out of 12 have no back light (the digits are correct, just hard to see). But when I turn on the instrument light variable control, it first dims all of the lights when in the low setting. But when I turn it on to the high setting, all 12 back lights are on. They are still dimmer than the daylight setting, but I can just read them.

Next time you are at your plane, turn on your instrument lights and see if the OT back light turns on. You may find that it becomes just light enough to see.

I am hoping it is an easy fix since the rest of the instruments are working well.

Still waiting to hear back from Radiant.

Do you run your NAV lights all the time?

In the 90's, Mooney used the NAV lights as a daylight sensor.  NAV lights on, IP lights get dimmed.  NAV lights off, IP lights are bright.

This is a subtle problem for my Green gear down light.  I like to run my NAV lights continuously for improved recognition.  In the day, with NAV lights on, the gear down light is very dim....

Probably not the same issue you are having, but may be similar...  Now I'm going to check where I have my dimmer set...:)

Best regards,
