In reading the install manual, it says to take the power from the battery relay to avoid line drop during cranking.   Two questions:

1.  For those with a rear mounted battery, is this where you drew the power from, or did you draw it from the main bus?
2.  If the power is taken from the battery relay, where did you mount the 5A CB?  Battery compartment or panel?

Connect it to the switched side of the master relay.  I put the 5A breaker in the tail very close to the master relay.  The 900 also has a secondary power input that can be fed from the avionics bus up front. I hooked the secondary to a 5amp breaker up front in the event the one in the tail ever tripped. 

You can find the aux power input on one of the last few pages of the install manual on one of the pages with the electrical drawings.  If I remember correctly I may have had to add an extra wire to the harness for it.

Yes, I ran a new wire directly from the relay to my panel to a dedicated CB on the panel for the EDM 900. You'll want access to the CB to reboot the EDM in the rare case it might need it.

Yeah, being able to reboot without cycling the master switch is almost a necessity. My RAD of my 930 is sometimes knocked out during engine cranking, I suppose by a momentary voltage spike.

I thought there was a wire run limit between the source and the breaker.  Seems like it was something like 8"

You can find that in 43.13 chapter 11.  I think it says as close as possible.

I didn't want the long unfused wire so I put the breaker within a couple of inches of the master relay.  I also didn't want to chance the breaker tripping and not being able to reset it since it was in the tail so I also connected up the AUX power to my avionics bus.  According to JPI both these power inputs are isolated from each other so there is no danger of cross feeding thought the device.

Thanks for the reference! That is exactly the set-up I am going to use!  

Has anyone had an actual issue whereby an inflight reboot was required?  Even if the screen goes dark, I don't really see that as an emergency.  Really just more of an inconvenience.  However, if one was needed, it seems a guarded, NC momentary switch inline with the power would accomplish the task.

Something to consider...

There are (maybe) a few things in the plane that are hot all the time.  The cigarette lighter and clock and FF memory are kept live in my plane along with a couple lights that can be turned and left on until the battery is flat...

There is plenty of room for improvement over the 90’S technology.

Probably a voltage drop, not a spike, spike occurs when alternator comes online with old voltage regulators just after start.

Exactly the way this should be installed, in my opinion.
