whpilot Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 A question for the group. My 1963 M20C has corrosion in the rear stub spar (I know, surprise, surprise). I am trying to decide what to do. I know replacing the spar is almost prohibitively expensive. Would another option be to replace the wing? Are used wings available? How much does a wing cost? I really like this plane and would hate to have to scrap it. Quote
mooniac15u Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Didn't we have a long discussion on this same plane two years ago? Quote
orionflt Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 I believe we did, long discussion....WH, how did you end up with this plane? Brian Quote
DXB Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Wow - I remember reading that long painful discussion. I really hope the poster here was apprised of what he was getting into with this plane. Quote
whpilot Posted August 19, 2016 Author Report Posted August 19, 2016 I bought this plane from Dave. I know about the corrosion when I bought it. Just looking for solutions. Quote
mooniac15u Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Have you read through that long thread? I think all of the options were pretty well discussed. It sounds like LASAR could fix it for $15K-$20K. What is your background? Do you have the skills to do the work yourself? Quote
KSMooniac Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 Used wing might be easier, if you can find ore without corrosion. The good news for you is that a gear-up or collapse these days will total most vintage planes, so you should be able to find a wing with some patience. Either bid for salvage yourself, or contact a salvage yard as they'll be very happy to unload a wing since they're not in much demand. You might need a good IA and friendly FSDO to make it work if you get an E/F/G wing and put it on your C. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk Quote

Hank Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 There's a wing for sale right now in the For Sale section here. And a fuselage with no interior. And an IO-360. All from an F. Quote
N601RX Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 I didn't go back and read the thread again, but wasn't there other corrosion than just the stub spar? Quote
DXB Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 Sounds like he bought with eyes wide open- second chance for the Mooney community to help save this old bird from the scrap heap? Quote
M20F-1968 Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 I have a plane that I sent to Air Mods that has a good wing. It was parted out by its prior owner as his wife was an attorney and did not want to sell it as an operating aircraft as her husband did all the maintenance for years. It is from a 1967 F. The plane was an excellent F model that needed storage. Air Mods picked it up. It is still there the wing is available. The plan was a joint involvement should we sell parts. I think you need to get a Mooney A&P that is older and who worked on vintage before they were vintage; i.e., with the kind of deep wisdom to tell you exactly what to do and about what it will cost--then you can decide if it is worth it to you. All you are getting here is speculation and I am guessing that a true cognoscenti has not looked at this. I'm just say'in... Quote
Alan Fox Posted August 22, 2016 Report Posted August 22, 2016 I don't think it is legal to put an F wing on a C ...... Quote

mooniac15u Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 In case @whpilot is still looking for options, there is someone parting out a 1968 M20C on eBay. They have a wing listed. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Mooney-M20C-wing-complete-/152225109427?nav=SEARCH in the detailed description it says "LH wing". Not sure how he plans to remove just the LH wing. mpg Posted September 1, 2016 Report Posted September 1, 2016 Wow,,, thats funny. I wonder what the listing will say when he tries to sell the RH wing? Quote
