You can pulse HID's now, although they recommend warming them up for a minute first. I have about 600 hours on one, The XEVision 50W, the old school capacitor and transistor power supply has failed twice, but the new SMT ballast is buletproof. Its the same as theirs, they get it from a BMW-land rover. Also, ground one of the 3 wires, it pulses the light off. But the bulb is still new looking. I'd buy the 2000 hour life on the bulb. Theyre like 50$ anyways. Quote

I have two Matsushita Gen 5 ballasts (OEM for Lexus) on my 1998 F-150 powering Osram D2S bulbs in a Lexus projector and the whole setup was $200 Quote
cmkep Posted August 19, 2016 Report Posted August 19, 2016 I installed Whelen OR65001R, OR6501G, Position / Anti-Collision lights and a OR5001V Tail position / Anti Collision light on my M20E. Removed a rotating Beacon on the top and a strobe from the bottom. I think that is where my 39 KTAS came from. Very happy with the results. My mechanic installed them and was able to attach the new wires to the old wires and pull the new wire through the wing into the cabin. The lights come with an STC for the make and model. Also filled a 337. One comment, the anti collision strobe, unlike a flash strobe is a significant duration and the lights draw 3 amp each when they are on. One of my radios can hear this as alternator noise. Quote

I was about to run a sync wire from each wing to the cabin to pre wire for whenever my old Hoskins power supply decides to off itself. We discussed whether having synchronized anti collision lighting would be beneficial or harmful compared to random flashes. Two things we agreed on: -There may be a benefit to keeping lights not synchronized. Human eye / brain perceives random patterns as more attention getting than something with a pattern. - There may be more of an AMP draw on the alternator if even if low current LEDs are synced for that 1 sec that they flash together. - I now feel better about my weird looking single flash on the right wing and comet flash on the left being more attention getting What do you all think? -Brad Quote

Personally I like the synced lights. However... wig wag lights tend to be more noticeable than a single or synced on/off blink. My airplane has strobes and, all three (wing tips and belly) flash individually, but in sequence. Never though about it before but, When you look at it, it kind of makes a circle around the plane: Right, belly, left. I think that makes it quite visible. You could be on to something. Quote

Yes on the tail light, I don't have the beacon, was removed by PO when strobes were installed. I did it at annual because I had a dead power supply and couple of dead bulbs. 1 Quote

I don't know the specs for any aviation models, but you're talking milliamperes when it comes to LEDs. Quote

Tail is an additional .2 plus .38. Total for synched wingtips and tail is .8 amps steady plus 1.78 amps intermittent. Of course for 24 volt systems that would be 1/2 that. Quote

I was wrong yet again. The aircraft spruce specs didn't have a separate number for "peak" and I totally missed the "avg" for strobes. My Bad. It does point out that synching strobes might have more of an instantaneous impact than I thought, but I assume that the battery would absorb the peaks ? Thanks for the correction. Quote
