Hi,  My 79 j has the wing tip stobes which i believe are the original Grimes units. I was wondering what exact under wing panel houses the control unit, I did not have time to remove each panel , but starting at the wing tip i did remove the first two(2) oval panels and only viewed the wiring going back. These were placed back on with new screws from the recent paint job, the further ones have been painted over , so iam just wondering the exact one for the strobe control before pulling off the other panels. Thanks in advance !!

Thanks luc, I believe thats where mine are as well, when you say the second panel from the leading edge , is that the second panel out from the fusesalage or wingtip in ?  Just want to pull the right one off first, as the panel and screws were painted. I just want to check the connections and test the unit before taking it into the shop!  Thanks !

My Hoskins power supply are also 2 oval (the one behind it is more of a rectangular shape) panels from the wingtips.

In anycase,  I believe all these panels need to (or should) be open at annual inspection.  Opening every other one at least would be good practice to check there is no chaffing, etc .... They have a hole indicating they are not fuel tank panels.

It should be obvious which panel houses the power supply because the power supply is mounted to the inspection cover with screws (on my 78j at least).

Tip of the day, before installing the screws in the inspection panels, put them in cup and spray them with your favorate lube, shake them around a bit to coat them with lube. Thay will not corrode or get stuck for years to come.

I had also exchanged old screws for ss versions.  I found after 30 years, many of the fasteners did not match the maint. manual recommendation (too long, too short, or whatever someone had on hand).  I used WD40 to clean and lubricate the screws before going back in the plane.  Kept them in small ziplock bags, relating them to the area that they came from.  Aircraft spruce sells preselected kits of screws.  (oil probably makes a better longer lasting lube than WD40)

Sorry for the thread creep.  Wanted to voice in on replacing the old with ss (including dzus fasteners).  After 10 years of ownership, I was able to enter and exit all inspection panels with ordinary tools.  This would really help you answer "what is behind panel # X."

Best regards,
