What I heard is they have a 20-something kid at the California location who conjured up all these wacky paint schemes. Maybe that's popular with the skateboard or the import tuner crowd, but it looks really awful to me.

Those long bodies sure do sit tail low, don't they?

Yes they do, and most have a runway "lightened" tail hook. Proper Transition training is key to keeping your metal your metal :) when you go to a long body.

Maybe they wanted something eye catching (good or bad).  Publicity is publicity.

Guys, who cares about the colors, it has a second door! I like that the designers responded to consumers request. Now that it has a carbon fiber fuselage, if they could just pressurize it folks may order it in even higher numbers?

The fuselage is not carbon fiber, it is just fiberglass.  And the whole thing isn't, just the cabin.  They basically took an acclaim and cut the metal away, replacing it with fiberglass to make it wider and incorporate two doors.

How and where did they make it wider?  I would have thought the steel tube fuse limited width?  Is it only wider in the doors?

All that change, fiberglass skin and door sills,, steel tube rearrangement. Two doors. Longer doors and wider door openings. and it's still only a minor alteration to the FAA.

...but an HID landing light is not.  It's strange

I agree.  If this were truly "minor", it would imply that we could add this on to our aircraft with a log entry.  I suspect Mooney had a certification plan and their fair share of paperwork.  My guess is that the hazard/failure category was minor, but the alteration was likely a major alteration to the TC.

On a side note, I notice that in some of the in flight photos the doors seem to not be flush at the top.  Is this my imagination?

Its nice that Mooney finally decided to wisely add two doors to the upcoming Ovation and Acclaim. Still for 700K plus, I'd rather have an older Bravo/Ovation and use difference to buy a home, boat and invest the balance in futures.

My tail hook is still my own. A couple months ago I hung a GoPro off it, reducing my tail clearance to 10", and I got a friendly ration of s**t for doing a three-point landing that was documented by the video. Now you all know why. :)
