Planning on going to Osh this year again and thinking of getting involved with the caravan. Not sure how much longer it takes and what the qualifying requirements are. I found the caravan website but there is no way to contact the organizers. Can he reveal himself here or someone point me his way?

What do you want to know? Feel free to ask here or reach out to me directly. You can reach me at psteen at gmail. Or send me a PM.

Registration will be up on the website as soon as I get a free day to get it done. It should be up within the next week.  But I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. Send me a PM and I'll give you my phone number.

Speaking of the caravan I saw a Mooney and a Yak departing KCRQ in formation today. Didn't recognize either from the Yuma Clinic but couldn't help but wonder if they were part of the group.

Well for starters I want to know how much longer it takes than going solo. As in how many extra days do you have to spend on caravan specific stuff. Next is how to get qualified around NYC? And any other fees, registrations, things like that I need to know about? Deadlines? Do you get Osh tickets through caravan or yourself? Just starting to think ahead about oshkosh and planning on when to go.

We all stage at KMSN, Madison, WI on the Saturday prior, ready for a Sunday arrival. We have a big dinner Saturday night and then have our briefing Sunday morning. We typically launch Sunday about 10:30am for a 11:30am arrival at OSH. Last year we landed 39 Mooney's from Lead wheels down to Tail wheels down in 5 minutes flat. We all taxi to the North 40 where we all park and camp together. Beyond that there aren't any required activities. There are certainly benefits to camping with the group including a generator, big tent with tables and chairs, a couple of meals are provided, etc. But nothing is required attendance. You also leave when you like. The first year I left on Wed and last year had to leave on Tues for a business event.

There is a fee to join and fly in with the Caravan. And OSH tickets are on your own. Let me get back to you with info about how to get qualified in the NYC area.

Flying in with the Caravan is a very low stress way to arrive at OSH. The airspace is ours for the arrival so there's no traffic issues, or land on the dot situations. And the camping situation is really nice as well.

PM me and I'll give you my phone number and we can talk about it.

Mike, we can start your training right now, right here and it is free. The first thing you need to learn is this:

Rule #1:

Don't hit the lead!

Do you guys camp in Madison? What do you do if Sunday is IMC? What are your VFR minimums for caravan arrival? Does participation in one caravan arrival qualify you for all future ones or need retraining each time?

I couldn't get on the phone today, but if you could PM me your number, we can surely talk this week. Take care.

Yep hitting lead is poor form, but the thing that a good wingman needs to know is to stay off the radios except to say "Lead your on fire"  and "I'll take the fat one"

Yes I agree, rule #2 is shut up!

Guess how I know?

This year will be my fourth Caravan. I hope Mike can make it. Perhaps we could designate his parrot our mascot for this year?

Do you buy normal oshkosh airplane camping tickets? Or does the Caravan have some kind of group rate or get tickets through caravan?

You have to be an EAA member to camp on the field at OSH. So you'll still get the normal camping tickets on your own when you arrive.

Also, an EAA member can buy a ticket for a guest. Then you can join, and that member will get some perks (starting at five new members, I think). This is how I attended SnF, and I joined while there. Now I'm in a 5-year membership so I don't accidentally forget to renew, and don't start getting notices the month after I re-up.
