NotarPilot Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 I use Garmin Pilot and one of the things I like about it is being able to recieve audio alerts in my headset either via Bluetooth or a wired connection. Does anyone else think it would be cool or useful to have Garmin Pilot allow a feature that would call out AGL altitude say, below 500 while doing an approach? Kinda like the big iron guys with radar altimeters. "500, 400, 300, 200, 100, 50, 40, 30, 20, retard." OK, maybe that's a bit much. Obviously this would NOT be used for IFR minimums, altitudes, etc. since it's all GPS based data.
MyNameIsNobody Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 I just like the new heading track feature. It is nice.

I'm not sure how useful it will be for the lower altitudes since the GPS altitude will be different than your barometric corrected altimeter. Also, I believe the big iron uses a radar altimeter to feed these call outs. That said, I have seen GA planes with the call outs. I think it is based on TAWS. Anyone know the details? carusoam Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 My KLN 90 B has a couple of options for beeps at heights above ground. Selectable, on/off only. Unfortunately, a rapid beeping sound as you approach the ground does not inspire comfort among the less flight knowledgable passengers... modern devices that are more clear in what the sound means would be cool. Putting it only in the ears that matter most is another good idea. Modernities that we get used to in other places. best regards, -a-
ryoder Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Garmins watch has baro altitude. It's a shame the gdl393d doesn't.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk the Garmin Aera 560 has a "500" call out. It's based on GPS altitude above their terrain map- I found it a nice feature. No reason why they couldn't add that to their iPad app, I figure, assuming it has the terrain piece.
MyNameIsNobody Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 what is the new heading track feature? Can you describe it or take a screen shot? Thanks. shows your heading in a dashed line with pointer. If slightly left or right of "highway in the sky", you know. 1
PTK Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 (edited) what is the new heading track feature? Can you describe it or take a screen shot? Thanks. Bob, go into settings, map setup, ownship/route, track vector mode. There are options for distance or time. Vector appears on the map when moving. Hope that helps! Edited October 4, 2015 by PTK 2
MyNameIsNobody Posted October 4, 2015 Report Posted October 4, 2015 Mine just "showed up" after a recent update? I must have hit a button or something. I like it. Easy to fine tune a slight drift that is hard to see on the map.
flyboy0681 Posted October 5, 2015 Report Posted October 5, 2015 It's been my experience that Garmin does not listen to its customers when it comes to issues and request for new features. I've had a beef with them for about two years now when they changed the color of the labels on the map to dark blue. That in itself would not be a problem except the blue is set against the black border of the map and is (at least for me) extremely difficult to read in a bright cockpit. Prior to their changing the color to dark blue it was silver and very easy to see. I alerted Garmin to this and the reply was that the issue reached the highest level within the Garmin Pilot division and that it was going to be fixed. Like I said, that was two years ago. It seems to me that Garmin places more emphasis on adding gadget interfaces than practical features. Case in point, all the work they did on the VIRB interface and the hoopla they made over it at the time. Don't know what VIRB is? Neither do most users. But I still love the program.
MyNameIsNobody Posted October 5, 2015 Report Posted October 5, 2015 Thank God I am a bottom-line guy.
NotarPilot Posted October 6, 2015 Author Report Posted October 6, 2015 Well if well if you think it would be a good idea I'd ask you to write to Garmin and suggest it for Garmin Pilot like I have.

I don't understand what you are referring to, do you have a screen capture? All my map labels are in black.

flyboy0681 Posted October 7, 2015 Report Posted October 7, 2015 He is talking about the stuff circled in red. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk That's it, just try reading it in direct sunlight. Even in this example, N57-KGED is easier to read because it's in white.

Piloto Posted October 7, 2015 Report Posted October 7, 2015 Is there a VSR (Vertical Speed Required) indication on the Garmin Pilot? I have it on the G530W and on the G560. Is there a terrain mode on the Garmin Pilot? José
Marauder Posted October 7, 2015 Report Posted October 7, 2015 That's it, just try reading it in direct sunlight. Even in this example, N57-KGED is easier to read because it's in white. LOL! You sure have a hard on for that blue print... I am fine with it but agree that white on black is better than blue on black. I just never had an issue reading it. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1
Marauder Posted October 7, 2015 Report Posted October 7, 2015 And it contains enhancements for VIRB! Lots of things... Notification that you have logbook entries to review. Target specific information from the radial circle Chart binder for enroute airports (nice if you need to divert) Improvements to the scratch pad Better predictive features in other parts of the app And finally ADS-B traffic synchronization between the map and split screen. I know this blue on black thing has you bothered, have you looked at any of the other apps out there? I settled on Pilot because of little irritating things I didn't like about WingX, ForeFlight and the other apps I tried. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
