Thermos type fuel caps

My 63 M20C needs new fuel caps (thermos type)... Anybody ever have any luck finding these new or used? Or what other options are there ( non-cert maybe ) ?

Your experience may be different....

My experience came from my 65C.

They are available new from your MSC. Check your fuel neck to see if has been replaced with a SS part.

Often, the one you have can be fixed up to work properly.

They are more expensive than you want to pay....

What is wrong with your current ones?

The cams can be built back up with the help of a welding mechanic.

Search for a thread based on that idea. It has been done a couple of times...

Same cap as the PA24-250 piper.  PMA approved for the Piper at 116.50 each from Aircraft Spruce.

Comanche caps are non vented, Aztec caps are vented and will vent fuel out the top of the wing in a Comanche.

So the Mooney can run the 2" non-vented Comanche caps?

Check your fuel vents on the bottom of the wing to make sure they are operational. They should be easy to find.

I've found vented and non-vented. Per my "that'll do" eyeballing, it looks to be a 2.00" opening. I'm unsure which one mine needs

My 65C had plastic fuel caps when I got it. The cams were worn off. That's where I started to learn the rest of the details above.

I bought the expensive caps and found they didn't fit in the rusty old fuel necks. That was the end of my M20C experience.... It was a one way trip to an MSC.

The Q and A on aircraft spruce says the caps are 2-3/8 inch diameter....my current caps are 2 inch diameter.

Are you sure these will fit?

Have you checked with O&N? They might have some used ones left over from bladder installations.

I am being told they are 2.0" non-vented type.

Doesn't make much difference if they fit or not. There must be a legal basis (Ie FAA paperwork) to install them in a Mooney. And if someone has said paperwork you'll need to purchase the certification paperwork from them.

You need 2" unvented caps the piper ones won't work.

I tried those and they didn't work, they're to tall the door wouldn't close...

Contacted shaw plugs...fuel caps haven't been made since April 2014...

Mooney had to have mine made special, through their vendor. They may still have some because I doubt they just ordered one set...

Mooney was out of stock, they gave me the part number to give to shaw...

Maybe one could try to use the top of a PA-24 cap "new cam" ($85) with the bottom of the 2 inch Mooney cap... The top and bottom unscrew ...
