triple8s Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 I was looking on TAP and started wondering what the differences were between an Acclaim and a Type S, according to Plane and Pilot it was a prop difference and some aerodynamic cleaning up. I had a 65 C for several years and it had gobs of mods and i noticed my Ovation doesnt have some that the C had like wing root fairings, flap gap seals, aileron gap seal and etc. I also havent noticed anywhere that any kind of aftermarket mods were availabe for the newer longbody Mooneys. Are there sources for any mods on the long bodies? Quote

Are there sources for any mods on the long bodies?First, the differences between the Acclaim and the Type S are slight...the Hartzell F7693 DF-2 prop is replaced by the F7498, the BHP is upgraded from 280 to 310, and some of the flap and aileron hinge covers are removed. Second, as far as any aftermarket mods go for an Ovation, there really aren't any...officially, as they really aren't needed. Among Mooney's many goals with the Ovation was including the large majority of the aftermarket items available for K-series and older aircraft on the Ovation as part of its TC. With a few minor exceptions as you pointed out, the Ovation is as "complete" an aircraft as you'll find in its class in terms of mods and such. A friend of mine at the factory did say that gap seals are available for an Ovation "somewhere", but didn't comment on potential parts and labor cost. Given the speed add would be "about 1 or 2 knots" at best, it's something I probably wouldn't waste time or money on, given the Ovation's already-stellar performance numbers. I'm considering removing my aileron and flap hinge covers to align the look of the airplane better with the TypeS, but am still debating. Personally, I happen to like the look of them, and am not convinced removing them would gain me any speed, so would accept leaving well-enough alone. YMMV. Quote
carusoam Posted June 21, 2015 Report Posted June 21, 2015 Significant improvement in the power plant similar to the other LBs... 310 bhp... TopProp... (N) vs. (G) IO550... Improved cooling fin design on cylinders Nice to have, not neccesarily have to have... TN'd 310 hp flying out of Denver must make all runways look a bit longer... Ask Joe. Off the ground before the halfway point on a 2,000’ runway is more comfortable than after the halfway point. Best regards, -a- Quote
jlunseth Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Well, and the breather line was vented into the exhaust, don't forget that one. Quote

jlunseth Posted June 25, 2015 Report Posted June 25, 2015 Things you would prefer it not to do. It would coke up, pressurizing the crankcase, and a number of S engines needed tops at around 400 hours. Quote

jlunseth Posted June 26, 2015 Report Posted June 26, 2015 its the famous problem. i think the famous fix was not to dump the breather into the exhaust. that is what caused the coking. Quote

There is a 310hp STC available. Quote
