JohnB Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 I used the Redbird full motion simulator the other day to do IFR currency and decided to try it again for emergency procedures and it was absolutely fantastic, I would highly reccommend it for all of us. On setup, I used the Seneca panel which flew with very similar stall speeds and performance characteristics that my Mooney does. Practiced engine fires, brake failures, strong crosswind landings and takeoffs, AND.. what I really wanted to do was practice the impossible turn. (engine failure on takeoff with return to runway environment). After being taught the procedure, found that I could pretty much do this every time at 600 feet agl, 500 ft maybe. I know with our Mooney stall speed and spin characteristics, this is an important consideration, and I would like to practice this in my actual airplane (with assistance from someone like Don Kaye who I havent asked yet) but at least knowing the procedure, which I hope I never have to use I think is helpful and I would highly reccommend. Great experience and knowledge gain! Quote
NotarPilot Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 That's great info. Which model Redbird did you use and where did you do the training? Sounds like someone I'd definitely be interested in. Quote
ryoder Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 I have some time in this one. http://www.camsflight.com/flight-school/redbird-full-motion-simulator/ It's pretty cool. Quote
DAVIDWH Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Hmn: As previously mentioned, Aerofly 2 from the app store for $5.00 gives a pretty good ride. Red Bird gave me vertigo and the final bill was about the same as Inst. dual in a C172. Quote
cliffy Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Our local Redbird goes for $85/hr It has an LOA from the Feds that allows the 6 in 6 and a hold to be done in the sim solo- no instructor required. After hundreds of hours in big iron sims over the years, I think these things do an admirable job for small aircraft. Quote
gsxrpilot Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 At Skyport here at KHYI, an hour of Redbird simulator time is free each month if you attend the monthly IMC Club meetings. I've been meaning to take advantage of that for several months now. I just have to have my travel schedule match the IMC Club schedule and it might happen. 1 Quote
Will W Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 Redbird has made the model for the Acclaim TN. Mooney now has 2 or 3 of these sims. I have a feeling Redbird in HYI can turn one of these on for you and have it set up as well. 1 Quote
ryoder Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 CAMS charges 120 per hour for the redbird including dual. Quote
JohnB Posted March 22, 2015 Author Report Posted March 22, 2015 Notar, I used the Redbird simulator at Sunrise at SNA. Good to know they make panels for Mooneys Dan, I'll see if I can have them get one. Quote
