helitim Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 While replacing my nose wheel donuts yesterday, I noticed a bit of play in the steering horn. Looking at the parts schematic it appears there are bushings that can be replaced. My question is, how much play is too much? Thank you, Tim Quote
carusoam Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Does this help? http://www.lasar.com/mod-details.asp?id=30 There is probably a service bulletin to define how to measure it. Mooney's web site usually is a good place to find details like that. If you only need the bushings, Dan at Lasar is a good contact. (From old memory...) Best regards, -a- Quote
MHemperly Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 I would say no more then a half inch when you grab the nose wheel and move it. Mine was bad. On my roll outs after landing it would shimmy quite a bit. Are you experiencing the same thing? My mechanic rebuilt mine with the LASAR "mod" rebuild kit and it feels great now but it is pricey Mike Quote
firefly201 Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Tim, Contact Laser Aircraft " www.laser.com". They will give you all the info. They also have totally rebuilt steering parts. They are 93nmNorth of you Lakeport, CA. Quote
Wakeup Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 I replaced my horn when I replaced my donuts. Mine was doing the shimmy as well. LASAR has the parts. Troy Quote
rbridges Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 I was hit with the nose wheel shimmy, too. I traded steering horns with LASAR. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 If t shimmies fix it if it doesn't don't worry about it. 1 Quote
helitim Posted March 2, 2015 Author Report Posted March 2, 2015 It does not shimmy which is why I was surprised to find the bit of play starting. Maybe it's just the smooooooth landings It's about 1-1.25 inches of play best I can tell. I'll give Lasar a call anyway. Thank you all, Tim Quote
rbridges Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 I don't know if I'd replace it yet. Maybe just keep a mental note. My rudder probably had 1.5+ inches of play. From what I can tell, it was the original part. Quote
helitim Posted March 3, 2015 Author Report Posted March 3, 2015 Spoke with Dan at Lasar. They have overhauled sterling horns for $525. He also suggested replacing the steering rod ends for an additional $100 while everything is apart. I want to fly again with the new donuts and see how it feels before making up my mind. Thanks for all the info. Tim Quote
