We're gonna have quite the collection of Mooneys at CRQ soon! 201DD at Pinnacle, there are a couple on the north side, and I'll be bringing home my "new" C in the next couple weeks! We could have our own fly in, and not even fly!

Nice, congrats! There's also 6051Q that my friend jeff owns who runs The flying club Pacific Coast Flyers. I have a little office at the western flight fbo, so when you get your C, ping me and I'll come down if it's during the week.

I'll probably be keeping my C at Western so I'm sure I'll run into you at some point. I noticed a really nice looking red and white M20 hiding behind the hangar there yesterday too. Didn't catch a tail # though.

Sometimes boring is good in a single engine airplane on a ferry flight ..........it means you did your homework and have many places to put her down........

I'm really hoping for a very boring ferry flight next week. Texas to CRQ.

Yep, boring is good in an unfamiliar plane!

Well we need to start having some fly ins for the San Diego Mooney's. The New Jersy guys are putting us west coasters to shame:) Plus they have Stinky pants and we have StinkBug it's meant to be!

StinkBug is putting together a SoCal flyin for any of you interested. Mid-Atlanticers......Marauder, Stinky Pants......it might be time to warm up out west and join us!

When I go into Albuquerque, I stop at Double Eagle KAEG. Good service not too busy. Not close to town however so good for a short stop but an overnighter May may require a car rental.

$8/gal gas aside, I always stop at ABQ. Rental cars are right there vs being driven into town or hoping the car was brought out at AEG.

I wouldn't recommend a pilot without mountain or high altitude airport experience to try to fly into the Grand Canyon airport in the summer time.  It can be a tricky airport with high density altitudes in the summer and high elevation.  The best route from Albq would be to over fly St Johns and stay just north of Phoenix heading west and enter the So Cal basin thru Banning Pass.  You would want to get over the Mogollon rim in Arizona before late morning for the smoothest ride.  I have been flying in Arizona for 25 years and this is the route I would take.

If the wind is blowing, you may be in for a wild ride. I had 15 seconds of terror of severe turbulence at 11,000ft at around noon in New Mexico. I was completely out of control. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. If I had to do it over again, I would have left right at sunrise and crossed then before the winds picked up.

Another place to expect severe turbulence if the winds are blowing out of the west is the Banning Pass as you go from Palm Springs to the LA Basin. I have gotten the ever lovin' shit knocked out of me 10-15 miles east of that pass. It's no fun and will turn a non-pilot (and even some licensed pilots) off to general aviation. If the winds are forecast out of the west more than15-20 knots, go very early in the day or wait until the winds subside.

Avoiding severe turbulence will make your wife a much better Mooney traveler!

I have had the crap knocked out of me on the east, west and the middle of the Banning pass. I definitely approach it with my pink pilot suit on:)

If the wind is blowing at Banning you can always cross over the Thermal airport and take V64 into the valley.  You will probably need to be at 12,500 for terrain clearance but should be a better ride.. I have done that a few times and at seems to work.  You can usually see the wind turbines at Banning when you are 30 or so miles east to judge the wind.  That gives you time to make your best plan.

I thought the wind was always blowing through Banning pass. I would plan on going high and avoid Banning.

Since I was going to,from SanFran area, I ended going PKE to TNP to V386 to V197, this was in the morning, so ATC just had me go direct thru the military airspace, not many mountain ranges, was a smooth ride with winds 10-15 from the SW, ...FWIW
