Cris Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Hi Does anyone have a couple of the rubber fuel cap lanyards used on the R/S that I could purchase? I recall a thread on this but can't see to locate any at the moment. My S is in annual and I need a couple ASAP. Thanks Cris Quote
Seth Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 Are they required? I have no lanyards on my four fuel tank caps (extended monroy tanks) on my Missile (M20J). Is this a nice to have for the R/S, as I've seen some on older Mooneys (retrofit) or is it required? -Seth Quote
Cris Posted October 2, 2014 Author Report Posted October 2, 2014 Original equipment so I suspect it is required. With that said I seem to remember that there was an AD that required they be removed from some models. Quote

M20S Driver Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 Hello Cris, I replaced one on my eagle in March and have one as a spare. I may not need it for the next couple of years so I will be happy to send it to you if you don't find one to buy. M20S Driver Quote
Cris Posted October 12, 2014 Author Report Posted October 12, 2014 Thanks to all. It turned out to be an easy part to get as it is made by Shaw who also mfg. the fuel caps. With that said It is ridiculously expensive at $44.50 for a silly piece of plastic with a couple of loops. Ugh. Quote

But my missile with Monroy extended tanks doesn't have any either. I suspect the STC deletes the chains for the inboard tanks, as the outboards didn't add them. Anyone have confirmation of this? Mooneymite Posted August 7, 2016 Report Posted August 7, 2016 I don't know if these will work, but they look like they will: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/ep/fuel_caps_zzaccessories/lanyardms27380-3.php Quote
carqwik Posted August 7, 2016 Report Posted August 7, 2016 You need a cotter pin removal tool in order to put on the nylon lanyards....don't even try to do it by hand. Takes two seconds with the tool. I thought for sure I'd be breaking the darn strap but totally amazed how much it will stretch. Quote
mooneyflyfast Posted August 12, 2016 Report Posted August 12, 2016 There is an AD or service bulletin to remove those.. They can get tangled with the fuel gauge float and cause the fuel gauge to show incorrect fuel level. My frame of reference is my 81 J model.. Dugosh removed them years ago. Quote

carusoam Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 What did the M, R, O & S guys do differently? They are using a rubber lanyard. It isn't very long... Just bought one at annual. Best regards, -a- Quote
Guest Posted August 13, 2016 Report Posted August 13, 2016 I really don't know why you would want one on the cap. Sure, in the event the cap come lose it does not depart the plane, so it stays attached and beats the wing and paint to death until you land. Clarence Quote

It's much cheaper to buy a cap than to reskin the wing (and reseal the fuel tank) from the cap banging on it. Tom Quote

I know of one Mooney pilot who lost a cap by not putting it back on after fueling. Both of my caps are original as far as I can tell. Quote

I circled back and landed, the airport maintenance department returned it to me a few minutes later. I was down a bit of fuel and a bruise to my pride. Clarence Quote
