Question about STEC 55X alt hold

I have a question about the STEC 55X. Is is possible to install a switch or button to disengage just the altitude hold? My Avionics shop says no and I can not find anything in the POH. Can somebody help me please.

If you have the control wheel steering button option you can reset the altitude without disengaging the autopilot. I'd also think that pressing the Alt button on the controller head would cycle altitude hold on and off just like it does for the other modes like Heading. I do know that a separate button can be installed on the yoke for alt hold on/off for the Stec 30 so I'd assume it is possible on the 55X since the system is upgradable for the 30 to the 55x but I don't really know.
