LevelWing Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 Does anybody know where I can find, or have made, a Mooney key casing that looks like the original? I have a 1968 C and that nice leather casing has fallen apart and I'd like to have it replaced. I contacted Mooney and they said they don't produce them anymore. Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 I am not familiar with the key casing. I assume this is some kind of wrap/device to contain your aircraft keys that (presumably) came from Mooney. Would it help to have a reproduction? Dave Morris (who frequents the MAPA list; I don't know if he lurks here) does custom leather stuff. He might want to make this one of his products. How about a photo. Quote
LevelWing Posted December 10, 2013 Author Report Posted December 10, 2013 You're correct about it being a wrapping for the keys. Here's a picture of the original casing. 2 Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 It would be no problem for anyone who has done any leather work to turn one out, but the Mooney logo is a different matter. Try contacting Dave Morris. www.n6030x.com Quote
flyingvee201 Posted December 10, 2013 Report Posted December 10, 2013 You're correct about it being a wrapping for the keys. Here's a picture of the original casing. I would LOVE to have one of these, but maybe with the new Mooney logo on it. This is COOL! I never knew the planes came with these fro the factory! Maybe get a bunch of members organized and make a bulk order? Some for the Classic logo, some with the New Mooney logo. :-) -Vic 1 Quote

flyingvee201 Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 Found this on eBay today. Looks very similar to the Mooney key casing, but its for a Ford key. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-nos-60s-70s-Ford-genuine-accessories-original-auto-car-leather-key-case-/310813140679?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item485de826c7&vxp=mtr#ht_107wt_1083 Quote
M20F-1968 Posted December 11, 2013 Report Posted December 11, 2013 This was a 1950's - 1960's thing. My parents always bought Oldsmobiles and each one came with 2 sets of keys in a leather case like this. John Breda Quote

He said he can reproduce this without much issue so we'll see how it turns out. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. 2 Quote
DonMuncy Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 When you get it, post the new photos and source. I suspect a bunch of people will want one. I had forgotten, but I remember when virtually everyone had one of these for their car keys. The concept is kinda cute, as you can unsnap it, swing out the key you are using, leave the others inside and re-snap it. The other keys will not then swing and scratch the dash like they will with a key ring. Quote
Hank Posted December 12, 2013 Report Posted December 12, 2013 Yes, Mr. Dave, prepare for a large following order! 1 Quote

AmigOne Posted February 26, 2014 Report Posted February 26, 2014 I also got one of those with my 68C and it also included a small screwdriver. Quote
LevelWing Posted February 26, 2014 Author Report Posted February 26, 2014 I also got one of those with my 68C and it also included a small screwdriver. Mine has the screwdriver as well. It was meant to be used on the cowling hatches to access the oil, however I've found that the screwdriver doesn't work that well and I use a separate one I keep in the plane. I haven't heard from Dave since December and I've even sent him a follow up email with no response. I figured the holidays were keeping him busy but the follow up email I sent was around mid-January and I still haven't heard anything. Does anybody know of anybody else who can make something like this? Quote
