aaronk25 Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Anyone know what the 231 with a intercooler, auto wastegate, LB engine will do at FL180 upto FL220? The darn ride in the Mooney acclaim last week got me really thinking about getting a plane that will haul tail up at FLs. With the LB engine will it maintain at least 30" of MP up high and what type of speeds will it do. A 252 is probabaly out of the budget but a nice upgraded 231 might work, especially with low prices. If its only 20 Kts or so faster than my 157K "J" I'll probably forget it, but is it possible to run 190kts? I have been searching the site but its amazing how many people have turbos but don't drive them up high. Thanks, Aaron Quote
wishboneash Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 It seems the following relationship holds. F:J :: K:252 I would save up to get the 252 if I were to upgrade from the J. Quote

Partly because sometimes it is too short a trip to bother. Sometimes because my passengers are O2 adverse - like yesterday returning from KFDK at 11000 with my 12 year old and wife aboard - but we still made nice speed at 11k despite a slight wind on the nose. But when we do go high - it is really a pleasure. I personally don't mind the cannulas or the mask. Here are my oldest son and I at 17k (with masks despite not being required above 18k - just because I was in the mood). There have also been occasions where the possibility to fly in the smooth air and sunshine way up high vs bumping around in dark, possibly icy clouds down low....priceless. 1 Quote
aaronk25 Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 If I'm on a 800 mike cross country ill run my j upto 17-19k, if I can get 40+ knots on the tail. The mask is a lot eaiser for me than the canola because Its not a big deal if I forget to breath through my nose. Still wondering what a 231 with LB engine would do at slightly LOP full throttle up at FL220 Quote
FAST FLIGHT OPTIONS LLC Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 175 KTAS @ 17k on. 9.5 GPh LoP are real world non inflated numbers Quote

aaronk25 Posted August 6, 2013 Author Report Posted August 6, 2013 Is it just the speed mods that make the difference in speed because with the LB it's the same motor as a 252 right? Quote
ChrisH Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 Ditto 231-Flyer, can get more speed to get to 180 if you go up in fuel flow to 11GpH. Depending on time of year, I can't run LOP above 190/210 due to TIT. Quote

When I was looking at the 252's they were 60K more then the 231 i purchased. That price delta seems to still apply. As a budget minded consumer I would opine that the 231 is the best bang for your turbo buck and even the GB engine could be run w/o the temp problems (at least until you get to the flight levels) if you have a modern engine monitor and a little common sense. Parker_Woodruff Posted August 6, 2013 Report Posted August 6, 2013 180-194 knots were common numbers for me between 15,000 and 23,000 feet. All Lean of peak. all were obtainable at various altitudes between 11.2 and 11.6 GPH. Quote

aaronk25 Posted August 7, 2013 Author Report Posted August 7, 2013 How fast does your J fly at 17-19K? 152 or so 2700rpm 80ROP in that ball park. Only go up there if light winds at 10k and 50kts up high Quote
M20F Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 1967 M20F with RayJay is about 160kts at 65% power burning 11gph ROP at FL190 Quote
SkyBound Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Nick - what MP/RPM and cowl flaps (closed/trail) combination do you use to get 175 kts at 17K? I only seem to be getting 165 kts TAS/123 kts IAS at 17K using 28.7"/2500 and keeping cowl flaps closed, also burning 9.5 GPH with TIT at 1560. Quote
