I got notice from the gurus at Foreflight that they had a new feature, "Pattern Entry Advisor". It is supposed to guide you to the point where you would enter the pattern for an airport. Tonight I pulled out the IPad to give it a try. I entered a direct flight in the flight plan on the map page, as per the instructions. It then says "select procedure advisor, then pattern entry advisor."

Problem is, I can't find anywhere to do such a selection. Has anyone tried this. Am I supposed to actually be flying before the choices pop up. Or am I just not quite bright.

Don-

On the "maps" page enter your route. To the left of the route window, close to the middle of the tool bar on top of the screen, you will see a small box with 3 sets of dashed lines. Click this and a menu will drop down. Select " procedure" at the top right corner

and from there pick what entry you want. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Let us know if this works for you.

Bodie,

Thanks twice. Once for showing me how to do it. Again for not saying I'm not quite bright.

YW! You want to have real fun? Try figuring out how to enter a route in WingX. I think I will use up my 30 day trialware version just figuring that out. At least FF and Garmin Pilot are somewhat intuitive.

Hi Jim - Mike has been trying to guide me through this as well. Maybe I have a "broken" version of the app, but I don't always get a map. Take a look at this screen shot. Why am I am not seeing a map? post-9886-13722469245593_thumb.jpg I also tried going into the menu and doing it from the route planning screen. But it looks like you start there and then need to go back to the main map (which doesn't always exist) to edit it. I thought it would be easier or at least as easy as the other apps. Something is not right...

You can also click on menu, click on route planning, then enter your route identifiers with a space between each identifier. Under weather, hit download and it will load the current winds for your route planning. You can then click on altitude to find the most favorable altitude to fly. Hit menu, hit moving map and your route is automatically loaded on the map screen under route.

You don't need to load maps before every flight. There are subscription status bars at top that are color coded. Green is current, orange you are getting close to expiring and red is expired.

Yes, I'm also sorry, Don, for the WingX hijack. Chris, go to the "database and subscriptions" page, then configure the "enroute charts types and regions" options to your liking. This will tell WingX what data to install on your iPad. Then press the "download databases" button on the left of your screen. Then you will watch as the various database and subscriptions data that you selected is downloaded to your iPad. There are a total of 10 types of data that will download sequentially and each of them will give give you a bar graph visual indication of their progress. This process will take a while the first time you do it, but thereafter, when you do it in the future prior to going flying, it is very quick. Sometimes the initial download takes a few attempts, but overall it is a fairly painless process.

After you've done this you should see map/chart data on the part of your screen that is currently grey. Whether you see IFR low or high enroute charts, sectionals, or, my personal favorite, vector charts will depend on how you configure the "view 1" and "view 2" options on the bottom left tabs on the "moving map" page. The "screen" and "swap" tabs to the right of the view tabs allow you to either split the screen or swap views.

Good luck! Stick with it. Hilton doesn't have much in terms of instructions, unfortunately, but his YouTube videos are pretty good.

Jim

That was the first step I did when I loaded the ap. I do get the maps, sometimes, but not always. Very strange. I will go back and check it again.

I will look back at the Hilton videos to see if they have one on route planning. They certainly have ones like "crash investigation" but they should have spent more time on how to use it. The route planning has been frustrating since it is not intuitive and it looks like you need to know the waypoints before you can flight plan. I tried the webplan tool and it sent me to places I would never file.

I'm not one to give up on technology, but this one is sure beating the crap out of me.

Very interesting, Chris. I'm sorry that you are having all of these problems. I have no explanation for them, though. I didn't experience any of that.

Jim

Personally I think my iPad is revolting. I have ForeFlight, Garmin Pilot and Xavion already loaded. I think it is trying to get back at me for pushing it's RAM. I haven't surrendered yet, but I am certainly looking for the white flag. :)

To close other programs running on an iPad.

Double click the home button, then hold any of the buttons that appear at the bottom, then touch all of the Xs of the wiggly icons....

Just wanted to get in on the action....

Try this, Chris. Go to the moving map page and then go to the view 1 and view 2 tabs in the lower left of your screen. Make sure that you check which basemap you want. Right now it looks like you have selected "none". "Terrain" will give you the vector map that I prefer for VFR. The other options are self evident.
If you think that RAM is an issue, just make sure that you have "x"'d out of all of the other programs before you open WingX. Someone else will have to tell you how to do this, though. I gotta go. Good luck!
Jim

This is SO strange. I have had everything closed since I began this adventure. When I did as you suggested, I got this;

post-9886-13722575503512_thumb.jpg

When I jumped back to Tapatalk to look at the thread, I came back to WingX to find this;

Another thing I know from my other apps is that the cycle is due. So, I went in to update it and now get this;

Oh, evil spirits...

UNCLE! I almost am ready to give up! I thought it was a memory issue since I only had 2 Gb left on my iPad. I deleted 2Gb of apps that I hardly or never use. Made no difference. I am going to delete the app and reload it to see if anything different happens.

Am about 10 days into my trial, after having trrialled FF for the preceding 30 days.

I have the same issue, but find that the map does load after about 30 seconds, or swapping screens a few times and then going back to the map screen.

The funny thing is that it only seems to have this hicup when i first use it. After it gets loaded I can get in and out, switchs apps, switch functions and 90% of teh time the map is there when i get back to it.

Weird though. Too bad as well, as in other ways I think I find WingX more intuitive that FF.

New release out a few minutes ago. One was a bug fix for the chart layers.

Flew with a Mooney friend this weekend in some rotten WX . He has WingX Pro on his right side yoke mounted iPad. Very nice. I may have to try the 30 day trial once again, if for not other reason than to prove Marauder knows nothing about loading and using an iPad. :P

Mother F$&/ing Phantom! (why is it that spell check always ruins my moments of glory?) For the record Fantom, I have made piece (spell check again) with both WingX and the iPad. You just need to figure out how to work with two money grubbing companies. ;)

Glad to hear it, Chris.....

Say, IM me your phone number so I can call you for help loading it, and removing FF :)

Gary - just in case you never saw a real pilot's iPad...

I like it, but where's your 931252_72337_thumb.jpg Mr. real pilot? :D You've been hanging with the Dent to much :ph34r:
