carusoam Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 We have a Garmin guy on board here somewhere... You may want to check in with him for some ideas. Best regards, -a- Quote
Marauder Posted April 22, 2014 Author Report Posted April 22, 2014 The weather in the mid-Atlantic was absolutely beautiful today. Heading back from the shore I was getting numerous traffic hits thanks to the commercials coming out of Philly. I snapped this screen shot of traffic that was converging on itself. These 3 planes all flew over each at one point with a 1000 feet of separation between them. A couple of them were actually flying in the same direction with 600 vertical separation before one turned northeast. Even though the portable ADS-B stuff is an incomplete traffic picture. It sure beats nothing! 1 Quote
1964-M20E Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 Passing through Eglin, Pensacola, and Tyndall airspace yesterday around Pensacola there were targets left and right on my I-fly 720 with the sky radar (ADS-B in only) Two targets I felt had the most relevant one a Bonanza at 9500 east bound within a few miles of me(I was at 10,000 west bound) and a Cirrus that crossed under me at about 7500. I was able to locate the cirrus but not the Bonanza. I wish he had his landing light on I most likely could have seen him easily. My landing light was on and I hope he saw me. ATC did not even call him out to me but I seem to remember they called me out to the Bonanza but I never heard him say he had a visual on me.This was the busiest I have ever seen it in this area. Marauder Posted June 2, 2014 Author Report Posted June 2, 2014 Just as I was going to let my ForeFlight sub expire this week, they have gone off and done this: http://blog.foreflight.com/ One of my big gripes on FF is how the stuff was not organized. Especially the charts. Garmin Pilot puts them in a charts binder. Guess who went one step further!? Quote
bnicolette Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Woohoo!! Thanks Chris. I get so excited with each new update. It's like Christmas a couple times per year. Now, if they would just release the traffic audio alerts I'd be happy. Well, until the next thing comes along that I want. :-) 1 Quote

Especially the charts. Garmin Pilot puts them in a charts binder. Guess who went one step further!? One thing that Garmin Pilot users must be mindful of is actually downloading the charts and plates prior to flight. Simply going over a flight ahead of time and looking over the approaches by pressing on the airport of intended landing does not actually download the plate for later use. Once the plate is closed it's gone unless you specifically download all of the approaches and charts for the state or geographical area. Quote
bnicolette Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Oops. Nevermind. They did add back in the audio alerts for traffic. I love Foreflight. They always seem to listen to their subscribers!! Customer service is top notch. Email them and in no time you have a response. 1 Quote

bnicolette Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 Also part of Foreflight 6.1 is a nice display of own ship if one has ADSB Out installed on the aircraft. You can use this as an independent test of your own ADS-B Out unit generating your correct N number, latitude and longitude, etc. Also, when FF detects own ship, it activates the audio traffic alert feature and it uses own ship's baro altitude to compare with TISB targets which makes the altitude indication more accurate on the traffic being displayed. You know I am struggling with an altitude reporting issue! Now I got to go out and buy an "out" solution! Show some pictures! Trying to visualize what it is doing. bnicolette Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I am planning on flying to ILG tomorrow Chris so I will get some screen shots. I'm not sure what to expect either. That was a post I found over on Beechtalk. I assume that my SkyguardTWX box will provide everything needed for the Stratus to realize that I have ADSb out and therefore should give me aural traffic alerts. Quote

I know I get traffic alerts on my Garmin Pilot even without the "out" portion. The couple I have seen were FIS-B. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
bnicolette Posted June 4, 2014 Report Posted June 4, 2014 I was head to head with a Blue Angel today and FF was nice enough to yell in my ear.........Traffic!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8JT2ZvStEY So, as long as you have ADSb out you will get an aural traffic warning from Foreflight. 1 Quote
Marauder Posted June 4, 2014 Author Report Posted June 4, 2014 Looks like he had you lined up for a AMRAAM AIM-120A... Wonder if that will show up on ForeFlight 1 Quote
Marauder Posted June 8, 2014 Author Report Posted June 8, 2014 I felt I won the lottery today! Full TIS-B for most of my flight back from Gettysburg. Ahhh, the life of a parasite... I got a traffic warning from a plane that was a 1000' above me descending through my altitude. He eventually passed to my right and below. Never saw him. He is the one at my 4 PM, descending and 800 feet below in this screen save. He passed in front of me. Quote
wishboneash Posted June 8, 2014 Report Posted June 8, 2014 Yesterday I was coming in to land (at Livermore) descending out of 3500 to 1400 when I got a 12:00 o clock traffic alert about 1000 ft below me. Norcal approach never warned me. I held my altitude so the aircraft passed under me, then continued my descent. Without this alert I would surely descended into that traffic. Never did see that aircraft. ADS-B out is absolutely worth it. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Marauder Posted June 8, 2014 Author Report Posted June 8, 2014 Where would he have been if he had been at your 4AM? Too funny! He would have been in South America, everything goes in the opposite direction there, right? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Marauder Posted July 14, 2014 Author Report Posted July 14, 2014 In case you Garmin Pilot owners missed it, Garmin Pilot 6.2 has been released. Looks like our international friends now are fully supported, new feature for the dynamic map called "Smart Airspace" and FastFind added to the data entry area (starts looking for things that match close to you). Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk These features are nice and all, but a major problem that I discovered with the previous release was not remedied even after I brought it to their attention and they said they were going to address it right away. Previous to release 6.1 the field labels within the application were white and with Release 6.1 they changed them to dark blue. Nothing wrong with that except the dark blue is set against the black background and are nearly impossible to see in a brightly lit cockpit. Quote

I am having problems understanding what you are seeing. Also, I found a glitch that I just emailed them about. The new FastFind features says your starting airport on existing routes and any new ones where you use the top data entry line are invalid. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

flyboy0681 Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 Wait a sec, are you talking about the blue in what I just posted? I never noticed the change... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Yes, the labels that are in blue such as "Home" and "Routing" are extremely difficult to see in a bright cockpit because they are against the black background. In releases up to 6.1 they were bright white and easy to see. Add to the mix that they are not resizable either. The times that I have most difficultly with this is when going to the Flight Plan page to make changes because there are so many of the blue labels. 1 Quote
Marauder Posted September 16, 2014 Author Report Posted September 16, 2014 Has anyone bought either the FreeFlight or Aspen version of their new ADS-B hardware. Would like to get my out solution figured out this winter. Another close one yesterday. Quote
carusoam Posted September 17, 2014 Report Posted September 17, 2014 Did you see it? If yes, how accurate was the +5??? Best regards, -a- Quote
