Flew from Rochester MN to LGA New York. Filled direct. Local RST departure had a funny sound to her voice when she said "turn direct LGA climb to 17,000.

Then at FL 170 in my J at a ground speed of about 180kts almost to the lake Chicago approach said mooney 1ad you have time for a question? I slipped my 02 mask down and said "lots of time go ahead" Chicago approach said its kinda slow and me and a few people want to know if you can really make LGA without a fuel stop?". I chucked and said "well I'm burning 8.5gph and the computer says ill have 25 gallons left when I land.

Chicago approach said "wow that's amazing we never new Mooneys were that good on gas".

Pretty cool.

Pretty good 2700rpm peak egt was about 7.8-8gph best as I could tell it was about 148true. Indicating 116kts -22c

Tried 80rop at 8.5gph, maybe a couple knots more that's about it.

143 true was 7.5

Like I said before if you can get a kick ass tail wind go high wind up the "J" as fast as it will go. Still cheaper than taking care if a turbo. But a acclaim would have been a awesome ride.

A J is at its limit at 17,000. Out west where the mountains are real it can be pretty marginal. I have come in to Denver on the LARKS arrival and have been unable to maintain the MEA because of winds coming downslope off the mountains. The tallest point East of the Mississippi, Mount Mitchell, is below pattern altitude at Centennial (APA) that makes the J a great plane for down in the East. I miss the Rockets ability to climb over 1000 fpm at 26,000'. Tailwinds up high have pushed my ground speeds well over 300KTS.

We were coming back into our home field a few weeks ago and heard "blow up" among some static and broken English on a stuck mic. Everybody got really quiet, then ATC asked "did anybody else hear what I think I heard?"

Just me at 210 my Honda generator and 50lbs of gear. I looked at my flight time when I leveled at 17000 and it was 30min.

Climbing 2700rpm 100ROP. Was down to 200fpm at 16,500ft

Listen to the Interesting Recordings link on liveatc.net.  Some are pretty cool!

A couple years ago, I was flying into Deer Valley AZ (Delta space) and told "Mooney slow it down a little, you are 60kts faster than everyone in front of you"  I guess I just wanted to get in their at that point since I had to do a 360 due to radio congestion then another after being told to stay clear.  The two, very wide, 360's were at full speed.

Yes it would, especially today. According to ForeFlight my Acclaim could do KRST-KLGA at 17000' in 3:34 and 53 gallons of gas. That's with a 47kt tailwind. That would be fun, indeed!

Up at 25K there's a 52kt tailwind but that's not worth the climb.

I'd probably firewall it with that kind of tailwind to see if I could bust 300KTS groundspeed.

How much tach time do you run through? My tach is a Mitchell 2566 RPM, so I think that means it runs actual time at 2566 RPM.  If I cruise 5 hours at 2700 RPM, does that mean I will put on 5.3 hours tach time? Hate to burn through my 100 hour eddy current inspection time faster than I need to, haha!

I didn't read this entire post, but I wanted to through out there that liveatc has an app also for iPad/iPhones. The cost is $2.99 and it works really well. I like it a lot better than the website.

While traveling with a friend in his Acclaim from Denver to St Louis, ATC called up and said, "uh you guys to a rocket on that thing? I just clocked you at 301 ground speed." I looked at my buddy and he just had this s***-eating grin on his face.

Old post but I was just reminded of something I heard years ago while flying out of my old home base of Caldwell, New Jersey.

There was a guy flying an ultra-light in the area and a voice came over the radio "Caldwell tower from Cessna 19 Bravo, be aware there's a guy flying his bicycle through the pattern".
