Marauder Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Lets not forget Roger Ramjet! He would feel slighted if we did... At least he is IN aviation! Quote
aviatoreb Posted March 13, 2013 Author Report Posted March 13, 2013 Must be a boring day up north! I would Roger that only if you wilco... Â :-) Â Yup - boring day in the North Country - Still thawing out and Maple sugarin'. Â Wilco is easy - he is the guy who will comply. Â Â Roger Rabbit was never in the Air Force. Â So it couldn't be him. Â Clarence had a drinking problem if you remember. Quote
aviatoreb Posted March 13, 2013 Author Report Posted March 13, 2013 Lets not forget Roger Ramjet! He would feel slighted if we did... At least he is IN aviation! Â I LOOOVE that movie. Â Too funny. Â It reminds me of the doodles I used to make when I was in elementary school....and heck the doodles I still make now that I am a university professor - every jet doodler knows the following principle: the pointer the jet, the faster it goes - and you can tell how fast its going by the size of the fire plume coming out the back. Â Rich of Peak of course. Quote

Steve65E-NC Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 As recalled from my Coast Guard OCS radio training. Roger means only received with no commitment to action implied. If you mean to comply you say Wilco (will comply). Wikipedia confirms this and states that Roger was just the phonetic R before Romeo (the Letch!!) won the day. So Roger is just a radio stand in for R (received). This is and was particularly appropriate for shipboard communication where the radio operator is seldom the decision maker. I think the appropriate response to an ATC direction/instruction/mandate (by a single pilot or radio operator in command of aircraft) is usually Wilco. Though you seldom hear it used. FloridaMan Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 I assume that's because anything that you'd use a Wilco for usually involves a readback. Quote

Steve65E-NC Â Wow - well done. Â Thanks for that. Â This morning I heard a student say, "Roger that" to another student about doing something, and I say that once in a while - and it hit me at that moment - what does this thing mean? Â And now I know.... Quote
aviatoreb Posted March 13, 2013 Author Report Posted March 13, 2013 Drinking, drugs, all night sex.....let's go fly   Ok, I know that drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden, but unless someone shows me the FAR against sex all night long, well, I'm not going to sleep early. Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted March 13, 2013 Report Posted March 13, 2013 Hugo,  I think the read back is just an accuracy check and is something short of a committment to action or compliance. I have read back clearances that I did not begin to understand until I had studied the charts. Bet this has, or will, come up in a court case.   Steve Quote

IMSAFE.  F stands for fatigue.  You have to ask yourself, "did I get enough sleep or did I stay up too late having gratuitous sex?" Quote

aviatoreb Posted March 15, 2013 Author Report Posted March 15, 2013 FWIW, I flew through Atlanta's airspace today and one of their controllers (whose manner I liked very much) must have used the phrase "Roger that" 15 or 20 times while I was flying through his sector. Made me think about you guys and this thread. Jim  Roger that Jim! Quote
