Had one of those moments only a Johnson bar owner can appreciate….ALWAYS check the floor before raising the gear!  I relearn this about once a year. Today could have been ugly, gear wouldn’t go up…..WTF??  Look down and realized I had smashed an errant port-a-john.  LUCKILY it was empty!!!!  Quick gear cycle verified bar was fine and time for a new urinal. Johnson Bars and Port-a-John’s are not compatible, despite their names.

When I had my M20F, I had one of those Sportys E6B electronic calculators. I kind of missed that thing.

Did the Johnson bar nut-cracker it?

I put an item on my before takeoff checklist for this: floor..... clear.

I put it there after a similar moment!

My often repeated trick was unbuckling my belt when I lowered gear.  My wife got good at rebuckling me while I flew the plane.

Yep, bent it into a bit of a U.

(Sorry, Rich, but I couldn’t help myself.)

When I teach transition students, I teach this flow:

Before Takeoff, left-to-right:

  • Fuel pump on
  • Landing light on
  • Fuel on the fullest tank
  • Cowl flaps open
  • Mixture full rich
  • Prop full
  • Gear area clear
  • Flaps set

I have them physically run their hand from the johnson bar down to the floor and then look to confirm nothing is there. It's kept me out of trouble!

I once raised the gear only to discover my small bag of chips had fallen between the seats. The bag exploded so I had chips everywhere. And I was hungry

On a long XC (a bit over 3 hours), I was happily cruising at 9000 msl and life was good. Suddenly there was a loud Bang! that scared the bejeezus out of me. While rapidly scanning everything for the source, I suddenly smelled potato chips. Two large bags were behind me, on top of my hanging clothes in the back seat, and one had blown open (the other was seriously inflated). So I had a nice in-flight snack . . .
