Hey folks, I'm planning to take my Mooney from California down to Argentina (via the Caribbean) and back. I've been preparing for several months and recently I called my insurance to get an extension of the covered territory. To my surprise the underwriter (Old Republic) didn't want to insure it. I'm a CPL instrument rated with 700h total and 300h in this plane. I'm working with my broker but it seems quite difficult to find someone that will insure it. Does anybody have experience with this and can recommend an insurance company or how to proceed?

Thanks in advance!
Fernando

Looks like a nice trip is coming

AIG and AXA are underwriters who will insure GA flights to South America in US registered aircraft (their policies were valid in South America). They don’t deal with private requests, so you may have to find a broker who work with them?

For brokers, Parker AT airspeed insurance, he know the Mooneys

Also, try Lance Van Wormer at CS&A

I'm from Argentina too (I assume you're!), that's a fantastic trip! Looking forward to a PIREP! A friend recently flew from Houston to Sanfer in a Cessna 210T, but he went down through the Pacific coast, which is not a good option for us with NA engines.

Yeah, two years ago I flew a Cessna 172 from Buenos Aires up to Atlanta, and Republic refused to write policy for the trip - would not even consider it.

Who did you end up using?

Underwriters really vary in the geographical coverage areas they insure. It’s a big reason why i am with USAIG and stay with them. They’ve covered me for multiple trips to CENAM and even one trip to Cuba.

I Agee. Insurance is an issue. You may get away with liability only. But it is not easy to get to fly down south

I got a reasonable insurance with Beacon Navigator, through Jenna at ZANETTE Aviation Insurance Service. She did a great job on finding a policy that covers 1 year of standard USA and Caribbean, plus coverage in all America from Jan 1st to March 31st. The price is $5300, while my normal yearly insurance is $3100, so very reasonable!
