I have a 2000 Ovation with Ryan 9900 traffic that's displayed on my two GNS-430s and my Garmin GMX-200.  (There's no Ryan head unit on the panel.)

When traffic comes within advisory range, it starts chirping "Traffic Traffic ..." into my intercom/headset. 

How on Earth do I mute this when it starts? So far, all I know to do is pull the breaker for the traffic system, but then that pops a warning on the displays about a missing input signal.

Is there a button somewhere on the yoke that mutes it?     Your POH should have a flight supplement section that has a few pages on every add-on in your airplane. it should be explained there.

No yoke button--the right-horn yoke button I have replays recent radio transmissions (a 16-clip sequence).

The flight-manual supplement for the Ryan describes how to mute it using a Ryan head unit mounted on the panel, but my plane doesn't have such a head unit because the Ryan goes through my Garmin displays. I've gone through the Garmin docs, and I have yet to find anything that works for muting the alerts.

That unit accepts a mute button. An avionics shop should be able to run a wire from the remote unit to a mute switch. The 9900 isn't supported anymore by Avidyne so I'd be cautious on how much money I would invest in it.

I don't want to throw any money at this. With ADS-B now, I mostly find the Ryan useful for the initial voice alert of "Traffic," after which I look at ForeFlight on my iPad to find it because it's plotted so much more accurately there than on the Garmin screens from the Ryan. But after that initial wake-up alert, I don't want to hear it say "Traffic" a dozen more times--especially around the pattern! :)~

Not sure if this would be legal, but the "traffic" alert now must go into an unswitched port in your audio panel .

It shouldn't be much to move it to an unused switched port (like the ADF) that you could turn off and on when you wanted.

Now that's a thought!

Wish I'd thought to ask about this before my plane came out of annual last Friday because they just had the audio panel out to repair the marker-beacon antenna pin!

Jeff, Is it a 9900 or a 9900B or 9900BX?  I know at least for the 9900B, there was a volume for the traffic alerts on the TCAD setup page on the GNS 430W.  You should be able to just set the volume to zero.

Hi Adam!

9900B. I'll look for that setup page.

(I mostly want to hear an initial alert and then be able to mute or at least suppress subsequent ones. It gets really annoying in the pattern, but I do find that initial alert really useful as a prompt to get my eyes busy out the windows.)

What adsb in do you have?  And why isn’t it connected to your 430w?  Im asking because you said your traffic isn’t plotted on there very accurately, but adsb traffic is on my 430.  This is maybe more work, but if you do in fact have adsb in, have it wired to the 430 and ditch the ryan.

Better yet, if you have a GTX345 run the Active into the 345 and the 345 will blend the traffic and show both, without showing two targets for one airplane.

Active will show every airplane with a transponder, even if they don't have ads-b out.

My ADS-B (in) is via a portable Sentry Plus suction-cupped to my back window and displaying on my yoke-mounted iPad via ForeFlight. I bought the plane a couple of years ago, and it had an ADS-B (out) transponder, but other avionics (such as getting an Aspen and ditching vacuum) have been much higher priority, especially when the portable units do such a good job with ADS-B (in) for cheap. :)

Fair enough.  Well hopefully there’s a way to mute that thing!  The switched output seems reasonable.

Thanks all who answered here in this thread and pointed me in the right direction!

I found what I needed in the 430W config options on the traffic page. I turned the "Traffic!" voice alert off completely--I hated that thing--and I also dialed the alert-tone volume down to 1, so it's still audible and enough to get my attention to start scanning aggressively without being chronically annoying in busy airspace.

The GMX-200 also had volume-setting (I could adjust it both there and on the 430W and watch the other change to match the new setting), plus it had a mute-duration setting (default of 120 seconds), but without a mute button anywhere, that setting's not helpful.

Perhaps the next time my panel is apart for something else, I might piggy-back on the work and ask my shop run a mute-button wire, but that's small potatoes at this point. I can take a little light bonging in flight (no, not like that!).

Oof, I've since discovered that this configuration item in the 430W/200 isn't "sticky"--I have to re-disable the voice alert and turn down the volume each and every flight. Seems it defaults to "on" and 50% volume at power up. Sigh.

Guess I'll be installing that mute button after all next time there's panel work to be done.

I have the same problem, but with my GTN750xi! is there a way to turn off these alerts... Also, I get a ¨ghost¨alert of my own airplane on my traffice display...

What transponder do you have?

There may be other ways to take care of this, but the GTX345 and GTX345R are designed to "blend" active and ads-b traffic. Active is routed to the transponder and then it determines if the targets it sees on active are the same it sees on ads-b. The blended version then gets sent to whatever display(s) and alert(s) you have.
