Hi all, I’ve got a bad wire, and figure it makes sense to replace both harnesses as they’re the same age. It seems like the Maggie harness is popular, but not clear why it over the Slick. Are Maggie priced better, better quality, or both? Also can’t seem to find any Maggie pricing. I’d call but they’re close til Monday. What they go for compared to Slick? It’s an ‘87 J, IO-360 A3B6 (one slick mag and one Surefly, but both use the slick harness).

Thanks, and happy Saturday all!

(Ps, I have searched and read the threads I could find, just no answers for these questions).

Imo maggie are higher quality and better priced.  And they have better customer service.

Thanks Ragsf15e.

One other oddity… the Champion Application guide shows that my engine IO-360 A3B6 should take harness part number M4006 (both), or M2983 (L) and M2984(R). But the ones installed on the plane are M4020 RH and M4019 LH. The application guide shows these as applicable a few other variants of the IO360, but not the A3B6.

My engine is part of the ModWorks Trophy 212 STC, which replaced the IO-360 A3B6D with the A3B6. This STC included a new engine and new mags, but I don’t know what to make of the installed parts vs what’s listed in the application guide. Any ideas on that?

I don’t have specifics on your issue, but even for my simple A1A there were two different “options” for which wires were connected to which mag.  I guess I’m not surprised you might have different part numbers.  When I got the Maggie harness, they actually had me tell them exactly which wires went from each mag to which plug and then they made the harness.  They are also pretty quick.

(Example only, probably not the right way)

Like left mag, Top 2,4 Bottom 1,3

right mag Top 1,3 Bottom 2,4

I did some basic research a year or two ago when I needed new harnesses and couldn’t find anyone saying anything bad about Maggie. Combining that with the better price, I decided to go for it. The customer service was great and it seems to be a high quality product. Haven’t looked back.

When I spoke with them on the phone, they asked a couple easy questions about my engine and were then confident in what I needed.

My favorite example of product quality identified by brand name…

Quality engineers discussing the cost of quality…  it can squeeze corporate earnings…

Then discussing cutting back on quality systems… it can crush corporate earnings… :)

What is Champion known for?

crappy quality spark plugs where their resistance changed towards infinity over time…

they knew what was wrong, please buy some more….

What is Slick known for?

a disposable magneto.  Inferior to the Bendix mag…

What is Maggie known for?

New kid on the block. Willing to sell a half set of mag wires for people upgrading to a single new electronic magneto…

Maggie has an MS presence around here somewhere…

the new kid has been around for a while…

Can’t stop with a partial list crummy quality players…. There are others in the penalty box…

Some have actually gotten back out of the penalty box over enough time…

Throw the Gill battery guys under the bus as well…. Two years of life when the competition goes closer to six…

Right up there with…

Ford Pinto

Chevy side saddle fuel tanks

GM ignition switches

Boeing Max single AOA sensor AP option for third world carriers…

Boeing outsourcing fuselages and not checking to see if all the bolts are installed in the plug door…

Boeing Starliner internal clock magically running 11hrs slow…. Let’s launch anyways.  What could possibly go wrong?

Tacoma Narrows bridge AKA galloping Gertie…

Almost forgot… BK relabeling other company’s products… that hasn’t worked very well for Mooneys either…

Always good to compare the various suppliers…

Every one has challenges…

it’s how they handle the challenges that makes a difference…

Old rants only… not a mechanic…

Go Maggie!

:)

Best regards,

One option on some Maggie harnesses is the screw-in mag plate, which is an option that as far as I know you can only get from them.   This allows easier replacement or repair of a single lead compared to what is usually required.

I sent my spare dual-mag harness off to them for repair/overhaul and was very happy with the results.   I haven't installed it yet, but the harness and experience working with them was great.

The only issue with the screw in lead plate is that it is thicker (taller?) due to the screw in leads and has more clearance issues in some applications. So double check your clearance before going that way to confirm you’re good to go.

i went with Maggie when I installed a Surefly and have been happy.

Also went with maggie when i installed my surefly and had them do the slick mag harness side as well. Looks great works great going on 2 years now no complaints.
