When you strike a king, kill him. It's axiomatic. He did not do it and paid the price. You would think a Russian would know their history.

A while back someone was accusing Putin of attempting to assassinate someone. A reporter asked Putin about it and he replied "That's ridiculous, If I wanted to assassinate him, he would be dead"

Video looked like a bit like a falling leaf before rolling off to one side and becoming inverted nose down.  Engines were still making power until impact.  Trying to imagine the ride down as watch the footage turns my stomach in knots.

Yes, but there is rarely a rush to retribution in these kinds of situations.  There was likely a more immediate reason for Prigozhin’s elimination beyond simple retribution.

I think the only controversy is weather it was brought down by a missile or a bomb.

My money is on bomb, that’s easier to say “not me” but still make it plain to those you want to make understand that yes it was you.

I heard that Dan Gryder is en route to Kuzhenkino to investigate. We should have something definitive by Tuesday.

I had to look up who that was, and guess what? A Mooneyspace thread was near the top of the list :)

I think it’s as simple as the Mob Boss sending a message, F with me and you sleep with the fishes.

According to flight tracking, the aircraft was routed outside airway of ATS route that joins Moscow to StPetersbourg (obviously, it was shot by ground to air missile)

PS: one fellow Mooniac is flying his Mooney around world from Argentina, his last message was two weeks ago in StPetersbourg, hope they managed to get away, we have not heard any news yet !

Just read an article that says, according to FlightRadar24 data, Prigozhin’s jet was coming down at 16,000 FPM just before the crash.  For a mangled airplane, that could be terminal velocity.

Expand

That’s actually faster than terminal velocity.

Most likely it is just as it appears - Prigozhin assassinated by you know who.

But my son and I were talking and you never know with that Putin guy.  I wouldn't be surprised if these guys are old friends and Putin says to Prigozhin, Prigozhin you made me look bad and you need to be dead.  And Prigozhin says I know Vladimir.  Putin says, make it so, and Prigozhin says I understand.  I will handle it.  That they made a deal and so Prigozhin faked his death including blowing up his own jet with his own crew and subordinates on bard so that he can live out the rest of his days quietly and peacefully retired and forgotten in a beautiful and luxurious datcha in the outskirts of Moscow.  So Putin looks strong in the way he wants, maybe a big money bribe payout, and deal done.

What is the terminal velocity of a jet falling nose down?

Terminal velocity of a 1000 lb bomb is over 1000 foot per second and I’ve heard but don’t know that the penetrating bomb made from a 8” gun barrel was supersonic.

I think terminal velocity is highly variable

Indeed. Terminal velocity for a human falling belly down with extremities extended is 120MPH.  Nose down terminal velocity must be considerably more for most planes given that they will travel faster than 120mph in level flight from thrust that is just a fraction of their weight.

Terminal velocity likely increases on the nose-down jet when a wing is missing and the engines continue to operate . . . . If you can find how long it took to fall from FLL280, you can calculate average speed, but realize that vertical velocity was small at the beginning and horizontal velocity was small at the end.
