Rigging in Southern California

Need suggestions on where to take my E model to get proper rigging in Socal. I know who the MSCs are, but am interested in pireps on A&Ps with experience rigging Mooneys specifically. Thanks in advance.

Any reason you wouldn’t go to an MSC like Top Gun? I was just there last week and have always been impressed by their Mooney-specific knowledge. I don’t think you need an MSC for an oil change but for something like this it would probably be worth it.

Just to add a little to what @ilovecornfields said, I have read some horror stories here on MooneySpace about mechanics bending things instead of doing a proper rig.  Not to say that the MSC is a guarantee of good work, but it sure improves your odds.

I took my K model to a MSC 13 years ago for annual and tank reseal. It needed a top OH, which they did. 10 hours later the crankshaft sheared in flight. Post failure engine inspection determined the cause was excessive side torque on the #5 connecting rod that caused the crankshaft to shear. The shop had no insurance (has since gone out of business) so we had to pay for an OH'd engine. MSC's are great, except when they're not. You always pay more, and usually get what you pay for, but it boils down to who is doing the work, their training, experience, and supervision. I now focus on the individual instead of the shop.

Definitely agree since I’ve had horrible work done at MSCs as well, but I’ve always had great experiences at Top Gun and would definitely trust them over most other shops, especially for Mooney specific items.

I too have had some less than delightful experiences with an MSC.  You hit on two realities of life 1) Everything is great until it isn't, and 2) It's all about the individual -- not the business.

I am assuming you’re talking about rigging of the trim system using the holy grail/Mooney rigging boards? I have the same issue with my 81 M20 K. I found fantastic assistance at a mooney service center in Chandler Arizona. Which is only an hour or so from my homebase in Southern California. Frank Setzler is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, and accommodating. Good luck.
