If your airplane is tired down outside in the winter that’s exactly what you should do, less likely to get ice accumulation in your prop spinner. Water should run out the bottom before it freezes. It’s not to much fun getting in your airplane starting it up and the engine feels like it wants to rip itself out of the mounts.

Well I was told to not leave vertical as the water will then weep inside the prop hub……who knows.  Probably doesn’t make any difference in long run.

I was taught to orient prop horizonally to keep rainwater out of the hub seal area.   If freezing is a concern, I can see that trapping water in the spinner would be bad if it freezes.   Does anyone make a prop cover for planes parked outside in cold climates?

100% this from years of parking outside in Chicago.  When you start with an inch of ice in the spinner you will know it…

I bought the 3 blade hub and prop cover from Bruce's to protect the de-ice boots from the sun, but it works for keeping  out water, too.  It easily is applied.  The first version was not as good as the second.  It had snaps.  The second version has zippers and works really well.  It's color coded with your airplane's color.

Prop Pastie. It’s right on point but the guy stopped making them because he’s paranoid the government is spying on him and that someone is going to sue him.

Horizontal is also better if you need someone else to tow your plane.

I was always told to leave the prop horizontal so you're less likely to get hit by all those students in high-wing Cessnas

My M20C lived outside…

Its prop always got canted about 15° off vertical…

1) It sucks when you get to the plane with a solid chunk of ice in the spinner…. And fuel caps that can’t be opened…

2) The birds didn’t like the offset very much. when they left their mark, it didn’t run all the way down the blade…

3) I’m pretty sure that neither I, nor the plane, were ever hit by lightening…  that can really ruin your day.

Mikey’s plane is getting newer each year!

Time to get ready for the Mooney Fly-in season!

But, what does he know….

He is only a PP, not a CFI, or a mechanic, or a musician….  
 

MS has a few musicians, and plenty of mechanics and CFIs….

It's a new day, time for a New Tip.

There was a recent discussion about lock washers vs. spring washers vs star nuts, and of course I can't find it. But I did just see thus incredibly relevant video on LinkedIn and thought I'd share it here.
