For Christmas my wife got me an Aera 760 without knowing what, if any, plane we would end up owning. Now that ownership has turned into a reality, and the plane has a very well equipped Garmin panel, I’m stewing over how best to cable/BT the Aera into the other components to get the best out of it.

If you’ve got an Aera portable, how have you connected it to get the most out of its capabilities?

RS232 to the navigator.  Although they sold it as having two way flight plan transfer, it wont.

Yeah, I read that over on the Vans forum.

Is my battery there?

My Aera 660 and iPad running Garmin Pilot will transfer flight plans both ways using Connext. That is probably what they are talking about.  My 660 is hardwired to a GDL-50 and both are powered using Garmin’s 010-12373-02 combined harness.  The iPad connects to the both via BlueTooth.  It is a very powerful combination that costs next to nothing in aviation terms.

I’m guessing I’ll use BT to the GTX-345 to get traffic and weather. Or, could that come from through the cable from the GTN? Too many options makes this confusing.

I can sell you a kln94 and a six pack for like 30k if you want. install that and you'll be able to use the 760 to its full extent. In the end this will please the wife the most.

@donkaye has talked about his additions with the Aera to a Garmin glass cockpit.  I've cloned his ideas and use it similarly, although I believe he uses one of the GDL's (51/52).

I have GTX330ES+GDL88 and GDL69A SXM.  I use the FS510 plugged into GTN750 as well as a hard wire connection to connect the Aera 760 to the pilot yoke.  I get flight data from hardwire, and ADS-B / FIS-B / XM via the FS510.  My Aera 760 is fully integrated to my panel and I can pick up all the information it has.

So here’s a question. Will I lose any functionality over what you have if I BT to the GTX-345 and run the RS-232 to the GTN? Another option is to BT to the G3X instead of the GTX. I’ll have to claim ignorance regarding knowing what information is being delivered on the different protocols and if there are any overlaps.

@RoundTwo  From what I understand, the Aera has 2 serial ports and only one Bluetooth channel.  In order to get the XM feed (from my GDL 69A) as well as ADS-B/FIS-B information I believe for me it was all Bluetooth from FS510, and the flight data via MapMX from GTN through RS232.  In the Aera 760 pilot guide there are several connection details for various units including the GTX345.

I started with the Pilot Guide but without knowing which information travels on which channel, and other unknowns, it’s not very clear. I’ve got a lot to learn.

But hey, all added up, I think I have seventeen possible timers! :D
