That is not the point.  We don't ride horses any more for travel.  Why use old technology that can get you into trouble when you have an inexpensive alternative that is much safer?

I have so much backup now, partial panel is when the IPad battery dies. I have the vacuum AI, the G5, the IFD550, and the IPad Stratus. Oh and don’t forget the electric TC and the whiskey compass.

It just doesn’t seem fair to call it partial panel with a functioning AI.

Lol

Don, you’re right. We don’t ride horses anymore. Most of us don’t :)

A backup AI is a fine and essential piece of equipment. I remember being thrilled when I first got an RC Allen in my mooney - specially after a vacuum failure coming back from New Mexico.

I dislike the insanely inflated prices Garmin charges for their devices. A small navcom gps for 13k ? Really? $80k panels? Garmin providing the vast majority of ADSB-in devices and closing capstone off? Whatever.

I did my instrument rating in my former J with a GNS480 and a 6 pack. Great navigator, and a decent setup to fly IFR safely. The plane took good care of me.

I replaced the panel soup to nuts in my A36. I chose a 750 and a 255, so a single gps navigator with a second nav/comm. it’s a great setup. I haven’t felt limited not having a second GPS. I have a Garmin portable on the panel as well. The only thing it’s used for is traffic / XM radio. Between the portable, the mfd in the G500, and an iPad, I didn’t see the need for a second navigator. I still don’t. If I were flying charter (meaning no GPS —> loss of revenue), or regularly flying on a very tight schedule in any weather, the calculus would be different.

The situational awareness with the glass is so much easier than flying with a 6 pack and an autopilot without altitude preselect.  I agree with Don- I wouldn’t fly ifr without a second attitude indicator.
