kortopates you said " the Bogert is by far the best one out there. it’s both light and it’s design guarantees you won’t end up on your ass".  Can you elaborate on how it helps prevent the "on your ass" thing?

The Mooney factory tow bars, and most others, insert into only one side of the nose wheel truss. As such they need to be steel. The collapsing light aluminum Bogert attaches onto both sides under spring tension and won’t pop off like the factory design; even when turning to the nose to the maximum. It’s all I have ever needed while traveling.

In the picture it looks like there might be something attached to the console to prevent elevator movement.  If that's true, how does it connect in a Mooney?  (Pic is of a Piper)   I'm not thrilled with the common use of the seat belt through the yoke, but it sure does lock it down.  I can adjust my seat so that I get a neutral elevator. @Papa K

I secured mine to an existing screwhole at the bottom of the radio stack. It’s an L-shaped bracket that gives the snap something to fasten to.

Thanks for the special issuance tip.  My CFI advised asking for a letter of instruction to take to the FSDO for a one time check flight and getting a permanent exemptions from the special issuance.  He took a 60+ year old student who only had one eye and got it approved.

In my left eye, I developed central serous in 2006.  I left my medical lapse - I was about 3 months shy of being able to qualify for Basic Med.  My vision is now corrected to 25/20 but, being an honest guy, I reported central serous on my most recent medical exam.

I should probably call OKC and ask some questions.

If you have one eye that works…

The process for getting approval is called a SODA…. Essentially demonstrating your ability…

I think Alex has written about the process… a few years ago…

Best regards,

Obviously a noob question, but on Aircraft Spruce the Mooney tow bars are L-shaped. Is that correct?  I just want to be sure before I buy.  I am at a small airport with only 15 planes and most are high wings / tail draggers

Bogert one works well, heavier but 2 handles and won’t slip out.

I’ve found that running the trim full nose down on a Mooney with bungees (J and earlier) keeps enough tension on the elevator to act as a gust lock. Later models have a bob weight that keeps the elevator dowm.

Stratus vs Sentry to connect to iPad Forelight (I have Foreflight already)

I had to do the same choice a while back and chose... the Garmin GDL 50.  It  has no downsides in terms of integration with Foreflight, but uses Bluetooth to connect to your iPad which is significantly more convenient (it will always just automatically connect to the iPad when on).  Also allows the iPad wifi to be used freely while staying connected to the unit.
