Lets start a gofundme to buy the Long Range tanks STC, then release into the public domain, and find a good shop to get a PMA and do the installs

@rbp, that would be interesting, but they have to be willing to sell it first.

Everything is for sale at the right price

I had no idea one could do that. For some reason, I was led to believe you had to perform 51% of the construction tasks of the aircraft for the experimental class. You learn something every day here on Mooneyspace.

You are thinking of the Amateur -Built or Kit-Built Experimental categories and you are right that the owner has to perform 51% of the construction tasks.  However, one can convert Certified Aircraft to Experimental under the Exhibition Experimental category.

In the scenario of quickly converting a plane so it can be legal to sell to the exhibition experimental category would probably limit any potential buyers one would think. They might not care for the potential pax, IFR, op time etc restrictions that could follow this course of action. But your right, I did completely forget about this nebulous avenue offered by the FAA as they discourage conversion of certificated planes under this rule for purposes other than airshows, exhibition etc. as a possible way to be legal

They may discourage it but there are more than you think.  The FAA Aircraft Survey 2019 shows that there are 1,998 aircraft registered in this "Exhibition Experimental" category which is more than gliders registered and more than twin engine turboprop aircraft registered in their respective categories.

Keep in mind the owner of the Long Range Tanks STC is still around here often…

He is an excellent member of the community…

Got any examples of how well a gofundme project would work for something like this?

MS has done a few group buys of things, and had similarly technical parts built…

Keep the responses interesting to the guy that holds the keys… he isn’t a faceless corporation…

Best regards,

hi everyone

has anyone heard this?  if it is true, can we say Jose Monroy started to production again?

I don’t think this is current.  There are a few threads related to this and I don’t think we saw answer if this is an active relationship.  Search Blue Sky in the search engine to get a sense of things….

I saw all that threads about ‘blue sky’ but this is called ‘emapa’ are those together? did not know - thanks for warning..

it is weird they posted ‘starting up again in 2022’

There is not really anything manufactured for the extended tanks...  A few AN fittings, rigid and flexible fuel lines for the fuel and air interconnect; fuel cap, fuel sampler and airvent for the new tank; and of course copious amounts of PRC for the sealing...  All commercially available parts.  Maybe if you just pay whoever owns the STC some $$$ for the rights (and paperwork), you can have your local mechanic do it for you (or do it yourself, if you're into sealing tanks)...

Just an idea...

I had heard that the stc itself doesnt have sufficient information to do the install. the "secret sauce" is proprietary and not published.

that s perfect news actually..of course I want to buy from Jose Monroy itself, however, if it is not possible anymore I want to try my shot..

I have been waiting like 2 years for that, and I need these tanks as I am preparing circumnavigate the world by the end of this year..

If anyone help me about this, I will be very glad..(I still pay want to Jose Monroy for the rights though..)

Wow, that's ambitious! I'll follow you if you set up a webpage. I wanted to visit my homes in Europe, or at least go to Greenland if not that, but wife shot down the idea. I got a permit for Alaska and Yellowknife in Canada only...

As Monroy invented this thing I appreciate that you recognize their efforts and want to pay them.  Have your ascertained that FAA STC will be applicable in Turkey? Will they make you work to get a local STC? In that case you might as well build your own system? Of course, if you work with Monroy, you'll get access to a known-to-be-working system...

Personally, I believe the system is pretty straightforward so I can't really think of a secret sauce to it. But I've only resealed the tank, not installed it... So I won't insist on this.

I suspect the secret sauce is less about the how-to and more about the FAA approval process that Jose went through.  This included spin recovery demonstration at multiple weights and CGs.  Not sure that the FAA would simply accept that part on the basis of someone else having an STC.  In addition, fuel system approvals have become more difficult to get if not for ferry purposes.  I think at least one person on the site has offered to buy out the STC….don’t think Jose was ready for that.  Hopefully Jose responds as to the status of his product.

Sure! I will definitely  update here and share my whole experiences..

We are almost set - except the fuel issue..

By the way, if anyone has experienced this before, any ideas more than welcome..

A few STCs that come to mind which fall under the nice to have category are the RayJay turbochargers and extended range (100 gal) fuel bladders. Given the opportunity  I would love to buy both.

Jose wants $100,000 for the STC but there’s only a couple hundred airplanes that’s are eligible for the conversion, most have already done it. So do the math…..

although not ideal, you can use a flexible turtlepac. I used a 33gal installed on the rear seat but they come in various sizes. The mooney SIM20-132 service instruction allows for overweight operation for ferrying purpose. (I have attached pictures). If you cannot find it, I can send you the pdf file of the complete service instruction.

this is off topic, sorry, but I see that you are in turkey. I was planning on traveling to samarkand this summer but current events will prevent me from doing so. I am thinking on going to Turkey instead. Can you tell me which airport in the istanbul area has 100LL and is GA friendly ?

Hi  Ulysse

Thanks for all the information! I am gonna use Turtlepack at the back (thinking to get 100 GAL)  but I still need a Monroy tanks for the longest route from Hawaii to CA.

On the other hand, FAA gives permission only 15% over gross weight, so..

That s a great trip, you should definitely fly over Turkey, will not regret.

I can help you with the all details, pm me your whatsapp or email address whichever you prefer, but initially I must say the airport you looking for is LTBU, Corlu :)

The faa is far too smart for that. You need to show that its temporary and for the purpose of developing a new stc.

Nice example of what the overweight WnB chart looks like Ulysse!

Not just adding the extra weight, but in the right place too…!

Thanks for posting the example…
